Experts advice to cotton growers as heat wave continues
‘Time to go for first irrigation’
Mercury still around 40 degree Celsius

Tribune News Service

Bathinda, June 11
The heat wave conditions prevailing in Bathinda and the adjoining areas for the last one month has not only hit the normal life here, but has also affected crops, particularly cotton, in a few pockets of the region.

The mercury, which crossed the 40 degree Celsius mark on May 12, has fallen below it only once – on June 1 — during the last 30 days.

Except for June 1 when the temperature dipped considerably and recorded 37.6 degree Celsius at the maximum level, mercury has been hovering around 43 degrees Celsius during the period. There were also days when it touched 44 degree Celsius.

There, however, was a phase – last days of May and first three days in June - when mercury remained near 40 degree, but the conditions failed to give the residents the required respite from the scorching heat wave.

Nowadays, the temperature has again been around 43 degree Celsius, which is, however, near normal while the minimum has been around 23 degree which is below the normal.

Today, the region recorded 43 degree Celsius while the day’s low was 23.6 degree, as per the Agro-Met Advisory Services, PAU Regional Station, Bathinda.

The prolonged heat wave conditions have adversely affected cotton crops in some pockets of the region as there were reports of burning of crops. Sources said burning of cotton crop was witnessed in areas which have sand soil and poor quality of water.

Experts, however, believe that the present weather conditions are normal and also not harmful for the transplantation of paddy. They say that rain in the period may be more beneficial for paddy as well as cotton growers.

“Rain would save precious time and energy of paddy farmers from irrigating the crops, it would also help the cotton farmers as the time has come for the first irrigation of the crops,” experts said, adding that it would also prevent the cotton crops from possible chances of burning as heat wave conditions has prolonged in the region.

Talking to The Tribune, the director of the PAU Regional Station, Bathinda, Dr Gurmeet Singh Buttar, said that cotton farmers should go for the first irrigation. “Thirty days old cotton crop should get first irrigation along with the first dose of nitrogen fertilisers,” he said.

Dr Buttar has some advice also for paddy growers. “Plant population for paddy should be around 33 plants per square metre for the maximum yield,” the expert said.

According to the father of the boy, Laxmi Narayan of Shakti Nagar, the son and grandson of Madan Lal Kapoor along with some goons surrounded his son at Sabun Wali Gali in Sirki Bazaar, when he had gone there to fetch his aunt from the house of her in-laws.

Showing a damaged motorcycle, Laxmi Narayan said, “They nabbed him in a corner and assaulted him with lathis. When he started crying with pain, they put him in a white ambassador with red beacon atop, which is allotted to Madan Lal Kapoor.”

According to the residents of the locality, this happened at around 7.45 pm but even after one hour had passed, no policeman reached the spot. Meanwhile, Amit Kapoor, son of Madan Lal Kapoor, came with some goons in a silver colour Indica, but finding media persons present, fled from the spot, driving his car in reverse gear.

In a statement to the media, Laxmi Narayan said that Madan Lal Kapoor had an old enmity with his family.

Disclosing the reason for the incident, Laxmi Narayan said, “A couple of weeks ago, the grand-daughter of Madan Lal Kapoor was in our house along with her friend, Varun Dalmia, who is a friend of my son.

At that time, due to the political pressure from Madan Lal Kapoor, the police thrashed us and kept us in custody. My son and I were released with a warning not to enter their lane.” It may be mentioned that the Kapoor family also lives in Sirki Bazaar area.

Meanwhile, Laxmi Narayan received a call that his son was in custody at the Kotwali police station.

Kotwali SHO Harmeek Singh Deol told the media, “Amit Kapoor had brought the injured Love Kumar to us, along with an application to take action against him as he was moving around in their lane with malafide intention.”

“I have clearly told him over the telephone that he did not have the right to assault the youth, irrespective of the reason. We are investigating the case and if Amit Kapoor, his son or any other person is found guilty, he will not be spared,” the SHO claimed.

When contacted on the phone, Madan Lal Kapoor said, “Before beating and picking up Love Kumar, my son informed the police. As the SHO was on duty, people from the locality took the youth to the police station.”

“We have only done what a family should do if somebody teases their girls,” claimed Kapoor.

As per reports, the injured youth was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Bathinda.
