Bathinda, April 13
The SAD candidate for the Bathinda Lok Sabha seat, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, today said her top priority was empowerment of women and drive against female foeticide.

After filing her nomination papers, Harsimrat said she would strive for better education and health services for women in rural and urban areas of Punjab. Development of the Malwa belt was her electoral plank. She said she would also launch a crusade against drug abuse that was growing in the Malwa belt. She seeks to reach to the heart of the electorate on the strength of her profile as a non-political, highly religious and humanitarian background, backed by her parental legacy as scion of the Majithia clan.

Harsimrat, popularly called Beebaji, although has respect for all religions and strongly believes in the concept of one God but also feels that one must be true to the religion one is born in. She has been regular with her recitation of daily hymns from the Gurbani.

Born with a silver spoon, Harsimrat has always believed in pushing herself through tough grounding in life.

After a degree in textile designing from the South Delhi Polytechnic, this Lorreto Convent alumnus took up a low profile job as the junior most employee at Global Ventures, a merchandise concern in New Delhi in 1988 on a salary of Rs 1,250 per month, one tenth of which went to religious and humanitarian causes. But she made quick progress and, in less than two years, she was holding the second highest post in the company as Assistant Manager. She resigned to get married to Sukhbir Badal in 1991.

A strong believer in turning every event from a ritual to a meaningful milestone, she started a school for street children in Sultanpur area of Delhi. The school now has 55 students, all their needs fully taken care of by her efforts.

She says most of her business income goes to humanitarian causes like education of the girl child and marrying off girls from the needy families.

She is also a regular contributor to the old age home in Badal village run by CM Parkash Singh Badal. Her social and humanitarian zeal saw her spearheading a pioneering movement, known as Nanhi Chaan, on environment and girl child.

Ferozepur, April 13
The SAD candidate from Ferozepur Lok Sabha constituency Sher Singh Ghubaiya filed his nomination papers before the Returning Officer-cum-District Magistrate Megh Raj here, today. He was accompanied by SAD president and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, irrigation minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon, chief parliamentary secretary Sukhpal Singh Nannu, MLA Harpreet Singh, general secretary of the BJP DP Chandan and many other local level leaders of the ruling parties.

Earlier, in a gathering of SAD-BJP workers, Sukhbir termed Congress as a sinking ship. He said that most of the allies in UPA coalition had already snapped their ties by fighting the elections on their own level. He said that during the rule of Congress-led government at the Centre, the living conditions of the common people had deteriorated.

He claimed that SAD was the only party, which worked for the welfare of farmers and the downtrodden people. He said that farmers could not get adequate price of their produce in the UPA rule whereas during the last term of the NDA his father Parkash Singh Badal used to get the MSP enhanced every time.

Sukhbir said he had already toured 70 per cent of the state and claimed the response of the people to SAD-BJP candidates was tremendous, which reflected their support for them. He criticised CWC member and Congress candidate Jagmeet Singh Brar for playing with the sentiments of the electorate of the region. "Jagmeet has the habit of forgetting voters after elections,” he added.

Fallout: Protesting EGS teachers roughed up

Tribune News Service

Bathinda, April 13
The big day for ruling Badals, today, proved to be a day of inconvenience for others as work at the Mini-Secretariat remained suspended for the first half, till the Badals left the place.

Ironically, the agitators lodging their protests outside the Mini-Secretariat complex also received bruises from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers for raising anti-Badal slogans.

As of details, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, daughter-in-law of the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and wife of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today filed her nomination papers for the Bathinda Lok Sabha seat.

In her welcome, hundreds of SAD supporters encircled the Mini-Secretariat. Sensing the passion among the crowd, police had already barricaded the whole complex and also closed all its doors for common people.

A number of commoners were witnessed being harassed for such tight security arrangements.

“The Suvidha Kendra, which is to facilitate the laymen, is today proving to be Asuvidha Kendra as even after coming from miles away, we are not allowed to enter into, just due to Badals,” lamented Harkrishan Singh of Phul town.

Meanwhile, seeing Harsimrat Kaur Badal, activists of various unions namely, ETT union, EGS teachers union, Unemployed Linemen Association and police trained unemployed youth, all holding black flags in their hands, started raising anti-Badal slogans.

Irked with the situation, volunteers of the Students Organization of India (SOI), student wing of the SAD (B), which is always alleged for being used as hooligans, served the protesters with bruises. In the scuffle, turban of Sikh agitators also fell on the ground. Some women protesters alleged being manhandled by volunteers of the Students Organization of India.

They even accused the SOI men for pulling their hair and dupattas.

Narrating their plight to media persons, they all accused police for being a mute spectator of the incident. Later, protesters calling over phone said that the police was not even ready to get their complaint registered.

When asked, CM Parkash Singh Badal regretted the inconvenience to all and said, “May it would be done just to check the overjoyed crowd thronging inside.”

On the issue of SOI workers manhandled protesters including women he expressed ignorance of the issue.

It may also be mentioned that due to the ‘mismanaged’ caravan of SAD supporters all roads of city remained choked.
