Another mobile recovered
Jalandhar, April 2 According to jail sources, head warders Uttam Chand and Bhupinder Singh and warder Sarabjit caught prisoner Rohit with a Nokia mobile phone along with a sim card. The matter was reported to the police. Jail Superintendent S.P. Singh said efforts were on to get the details of the calls made and received on this mobile number. This is the 12th seizure of prohibited items in the jail from March 16 to April 2. As many as eight recoveries of drugs and four of mobile phones have been made within the past fortnight. While The Tribune already reported in detail the seizures of five consignments of drugs and three mobile phones from March 16 to 25, as many
as four more seizures of prohibited items have been made. Meanwhile, an undertrial prisoner Kuljit Singh alleged that he had been beaten in the jail. He levelled these accusations when he was brought to a city court in connection with his appearance in a criminal case. Rubbishing his allegations, S.P. Singh said the allegation was part of an attempt at demoralising his staff with whose help as many as 12 seizures of prohibited items had been made within a fortnight. Strictness in the jail would continue despite such attempts, he added. Kuljit Singh has been facing trial in several cases including a murder charge. |

Verbal Orders
Tarn Taran, April 2 Many eyebrows have been raised over his proximity with hotelier Harinder Singh
Dhillon. Dhillon and his gunman Karam Singh were arrested in connection with a firing incident at Umranangal village, near
Rayya, at Beas police station falling under Amritsar (Rural) police district on Monday. As many as six persons were injured in the clash between the Brick-kiln Owners Union and activists of various labour unions who were holding a dharna demanding a hike in the minimum wages as per the notification of state government. District police chief Surinder Pal Singh Parmar said SP (Detective) Malwinder Singh Sidhu would conduct an inquiry on how Dhillon managed to get a security gunman belonging to the home guards even as no gunman could be provided to any private person without the requisite permission of the Additional Director-General
of Police (Security). Talking to this correspondent, the SSP admitted that the violations of the norms were taking place at the district level. He added the salary of Karam Singh had been stopped. He said strict action would be taken against whoever would be found guilty after the probe. Investigations by The Tribune revealed that Karam Singh had been attached with Dhillon since October 2006 after the “verbal orders” of an SP rank officer. |

Chati, supporters join SAD
Majitha, April 2 Bikram Singh Majithia, patron, Youth Akali Dal (YAD), and former Punjab Information Minister, while welcoming Chati and his supporters into the party fold said Chati had taken a great decision which had not only broken the backbone of the Congress in the Majitha assembly constituency, but also strengthened the position of SAD-BJP candidate Navjot Singh Sidhu. Lashing out at the Congress, he said the opposition party was never serious about the welfare of the people of the state. Majithia said Capt Amarinder Singh, former Punjab Chief Minister, should announce the boycott of elections to show his resentment to the Congress high command for allotting ticket to alleged conspirators of anti-Sikh riots of 1984 if he cared for the Sikh community and Punjab. The YAD patron said UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh or Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi were never sincere in apologising to the Sikh community in Parliament for the anti-Sikh riots of 1984. The allotment of Congress ticket to those responsible for perpetrating the heinous crime was a proof of that. He said people of the state would never forgive the Gandhi family for this and would ensure the win of all 13 parliamentary seats by whole-heartedly voting in favour of the
SAD-BJP candidates. Speaking on the occasion, Mukhtar Singh Chati said though he belonged to the family who had always supported the Congress but after keeping in view the development works undertaken by Majithia he decided to join the SAD. |
