BJP’s mahant kicks off campaign
Haridwar, March 23
Swami Yatindranand first offered prayers at the Mayadevi temple in the presence of several party workers. Interestingly, state education minister Madan Kaushik, who was earlier announced as the party candidate from Haridwar, accompanied him. Then the procession proceeded to Juna Akhara and later to Har-Ki-Pauri where they offered respects. Apart from several party workers, as many as 200 saints were present in the procession. Roorkee BJP legislator Suresh Jain and party secretary (organisation) Naresh Bansal also attended the ceremony. Later, a meeting was held at Nishkam Sewa Trust where political strategies were chalked out and Madan Kaushik reaffirmed his faith in the party. He said he would work to ensure BJP's victory and refuted rumours of any resentment. Notably, Kaushik had last month performed rituals at Har-Ki-Pauri and later campaigned extensively in Dharampur, Doiwala and Rishikesh, but later had to bow down in front of the party high comman'd decision. |

... Even as Cong trashes CM’s highway claim
Dehradun, March 23 Mohan Parkash, secretary, All-India Congress Committee (AICC) and party spokesperson, who was here today, questioned the claims of Khanduri that during his stint as Union minister national highways were built at a rapid pace. Comparing the record of Khanduri as Union Surface Transport Minister and the five-year stint of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government led by the Congress, Parkash said Khanduri's progress on national highways pales before the fast development carried out by UPA government. He said a total of 2,390 kms of national highways were added on the average of 1.86 km per day during the tenure of Khanduri, while during the UPA rule from 2004 till 2009, a total of 6,795 km, at an average of 4.3 km per day, was achieved. He claimed that the Congress-led UPA government has fulfilled 98 per cent of the promises made in the election manifesto of 2004. "The economy and growth has grown during the UPA government despite global meltdown," he said. Parkash said when the entire world has been facing job cuts; the UPA government has given Sixth Pay Commission benefits to employees. "When banks around the world are facing crises, the UPA government has been giving loan targets to banks," he claimed. On the achievements of the present UPA government, Parkash said loans worth Rs 72,000 crore of small farmers were waived and budget allocations in the farm sector increased to 300 per cent. In the education sector, the increase was 900 per cent of the previous government's budget. |

Nano boon cheers up Khanduri
Dehradun, March 23 Ever since Uttarakhand came into existence on November 9, 2000, the hill state, popularly known as Dev Bhoomi, has come a long way. And there is no better example than the fact that Nano car being rolled out is from the Pantnagar plant. Until the company’s dedicated facility for the small car at Sanand in Gujarat is fully ready, it is believed that Tata Motors factory in Pantnagar may be the only one that will produce the Nano. Expressing his happiness, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Maj Gen BC Khanduri (retd) said, “It is indeed a matter of pride that Pantnagar got the distinction of rolling out the Nano. Also, the manufacturing of the Nano will not only benefit customers and Tata Motors but it is also a boon for the state.” He added that the launch of the Nano is testimony to the industrial development that had taken place in Uttarakhand during the past eight years. Khanduri also said that since the company’s production in Pantnagar would be sold from Uttarakhand only, manufacturing of Nano in Pantnagar will fill the coffers of the state by Rs 200 crore annually in the form of VAT and other taxes. Meanwhile, there is another good news for the state as far as Nano is concerned. The Tata Motors have expressed their desire to set up a permanent satellite facility at Pantnagar for producing Nanos. Currently, besides manufacturing ACE trucks, the interim production of Nano is also going on from this plant. While confirming this, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Indu Kumar Pandey said that Tata Motors is planning to produce a total of 50,000 Nanos annually from the Pantnagar unit. Besides, the company has also agreed to distribute all its Nano cars from Pantnagar through its new subsidiary Tata Motors Distribution Co. Ltd. |

Bhasin counters Bahuguna’s remarks
Dehradun, March 23 Dr. Bhasin alleged that only a “select” few were benefited during the Congress regime. “But in Khanduri’s rule, all sections of society, including the women, ex-servicemen, poor and downtrodden, youth, farmers etc are being taken care off.” He claimed that state is witnessing overall development and the Khanduri government is has put the state on the fast track of progress. “The Congress, on other hand, is not concerned with Uttarakhand. The UPA government at the Centre meted out step-motherly treatment to the state,” alleged Dr. Bhasin. Rubbishing the claims of Bahuguna that BJP was trying to make Ganga river a political issue during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, he said the Uttarakhand government has a clear policy that hydro-electric projects in the state should continue, while ensuring the sanctity of the natural flow of the Ganga. |

"The tenure of the Dixit Committee was extended seven times. What is more unfortunate is the fact that now it has been more than six months since the Committee submitted its report to the state government. “However, it has not been made public yet,” she said.
