Dera row
Bathinda, March 17 In the case, the Jaito police booked Daduwal and around 40 unidentified persons for assaulting policemen when they were stopped from moving towards a religious programme of a Dera Sacha Sauda follower at Bajakhana village on Monday. Earlier, in the morning, Daduwal along with 13 others were sent to judicial custody in Bathinda jail till March 24 as a preventive measure. As per the details gathered, the Bathinda police had arrested as many as 96 radical Sikhs, who were accused of blocking the Talwandi Sabo-Bathinda road for couple of hours in a protest against the Faridkot police on Monday. According to senior police officers, 51 of the protesting Sikhs were kept at the Kotfatta police station, 31 at Maur and 14, including Daduwal, were kept at CIA police station under the custody of the Sadar police station. They all were booked under sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC. While alighting from police lorry, Daduwal accused the CM of being a kingpin behind the whole incident as he was focusing on the Dera votes. He also charged the Faridkot police with beating them up and then 'falsely implicating' them in a case related to attempt to murder. He said the Faridkot police opened fire on them, served them with lathis and damaged their vehicles, adding, "None of our followers shot fire from the 'licensed' weapons they were carrying." The arrested Sikhs also alleged that they were not even medically examined in the police station. When contacted, Ashish Chaudhary, SSP Bathinda, said, "All this had been done to maintain law and order. A team of doctors has been sent in jail for their check up." In a late development, 31 Sikhs, who were booked at the Maur police station, were being transported to the Barnala jail when, on reaching near military Cantonment, they smashed the windowpanes of a police vehicle. They also lodged resentment from going to Barnala jail. Observing the high-voltage drama, the police took them to the Bathinda jail. |

LS POLLS
Bathinda, March 17 Six out of the seven Congress MLAs of the area have reportedly pleaded before the party high-command that Raninder had bright prospects of winning. Local MLA Harminder Singh Jassi had so far not come out openly in support of Raninder as he was also in the race for the ticket. However, both shared the dais during a public meeting here recently. The other party MLAs of the area, Jeetmohinder Sidhu, Makhan Singh, Ajaib Singh Bhatti, Sher Singh, Mangat Ram Bansal and Ajit Inder Singh were rallying around Raninder. It is learnt that the two party observers, Virender Kataria and G.S. Bali, who were recently sent here separately to meet the party workers and feel the pulse of voters, have found him as a better bet. Mahesh Inder Singh, a senior Congress leader and a close relative of CM Parkash Singh Badal, who was also considered a candidate initially, during a meeting of party leaders, openly told Bali that Raninder was a better option than him. Of the nine assembly segments of Bathinda, Mansa and Muktsar districts falling in the Bathinda parliamentary constituency, seven have sitting MLAs belonging to the Congress. They were already projecting Raninder as the party’s candidate by organising his rallies in their respective areas. Although Jassi, who represents the Bathinda (urban) seat and is closely related to the Dera Sacha Sauda chief, has failed to maintain a constant touch with the electorate and mostly remains out of the town, a section of state Congress leadership opposed to Amrinder Singh was pushing his (Jassi’s) candidature on the plea that the Dera supporters form a big chunk of votes. On the other hand, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has created a suspense about their candidate by adopting a wait and watch policy till the Congress announces its candidate. Except Bathinda, the SAD has announced its candidates for all other seats. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, wife of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, earlier made several trips here and addressed party activists in most of the 50 wards of the municipal corporation. Surinder Kaur Badal, wife of the CM, has also addressed a series of meetings here. |

Bathinda, March 17 All the vends would be allotted through a lucky draw system on March 20. As per the details, large numbers of women have showed their interest in the auction this time. Besides, individuals and groups of Rajasthan and Haryana, are also trying their luck. Sources said that a Hanumangarh-based firm - Ganga Jal had submitted around 100 applications all for Bathinda city and one Punia group of Rajasthan has also showed interest. On the other hand, the Chadha group, one of the major groups of liquor contractors in Punjab, is not appearing much enthusiastic this time. In a fresh development, another major player, the Shiv Lal Doda group, which had applied last time in collaboration with the Chadha group, this time has come even with its separate applications, under the banner of Gagan Wine Company. As per sources, for Bathinda city, there were eight group lotteries of four units each and the application form was priced at Rs 32,000. In this category, 621 applicants have come forward. In the category of 25 groups having two units each, Rs 16,000 was the forms fee and the department has received 1,848 applications in this connection. For 62 single unit lotteries (form price Rs 9000), as many as 4739 persons have applied. Jaspal Garg, assistant excise and taxation commissioner, Bathinda, “Preliminary information indicates that Bathinda is top among districts in term of collecting such a huge sum.” |
Auction of liquor vends in Mansa
Mansa, March 17 The officials of the department said that for the allotment of liquor vends, 60 groups had been formed and there were 183 Punjab Made Liquor (PML) and 23 Indian Made Foreign liquor (IMFL) for auction in the district. The department had received as many as 7139 applications and got revenue of Rs 8.22 crore from the sale of forms. The officials said that last year 64 groups were formed for the auction of liquor vends and 3240 applications were received and an income of Rs 2.20 crore was received. The auction would take place at a hotel in Mansa on March 20. |
Medical practitioners hold rally
Bathinda, March 17 Addressing the rally, Ramesh Kumar Bali, president of the association, accused the state health department and the police of highhandedness as they were forcing practitioners in small villages and towns out of business following a court decision. The police was also registering false cases against them in an attempt to harass them, he alleged. L.C. Sharma, president of the Haryana unit of the association, regretted that the government was playing into the hands of the Indian Medical Association
(IMA) doctors. He said the major demand of the agitators was that they be allowed to register themselves with state medical authorities and practice in villages. The decision of the government disallowing them from doing so had virtually affected more than 1.5 lakh families in the state, he added. Sharma said government should initiate steps to recognise those persons who had secured degrees from outside the state. In case the government found them unfit to practice medicine, they should be given additional coaching, he added. The protesters flayed the government for not calling them to the negotiating table and pleaded that rather than looking at their problems from legal angle, the government should keep in view the social and economic aspects and hardships being faced by them. |
