New Delhi, February 9
Iran today disapproved of the role being played by the United States to ease tension between India and Pakistan in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, saying countries in this region don’t require any assistance from ‘external forces’ to settle bilateral problems.

Custodial deaths up in Punjab
New Delhi, February 9
There has been “huge dramatic” increase in the number of custodial deaths in Punjab, the Supreme Court was informed today. Senior counsel Abhishek Singhvi told the Bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan Punjab had filed affidavit, reporting 80 deaths in custody in 2006 and 63 in 2007.

Ahmedabad, February 9
Some key police officials, posted in violence-affected areas during 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat, are under the scanner of Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has arrested a senior officer in connection with one of the cases.

Traditional Medicines
A strong dose to check wrong patents
New Delhi, February 9
Traditional medicinal knowledge of India comprising two lakh formulations can no longer be pirated at the international level. After nine years of pursuit, the government has signed a historic agreement with the European Patent Office (EPO) to prevent the grant of wrong patents concerning Indian systems of medicine at the international level.
