Amid the talk of tougher anti-terror laws being on the anvil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the war against such crimes might take away “certain rights and freedoms” of the people, but would not target any group or section, nor brutalise society.

Pakistan has banned the Jamaat-ud-Dawa for its own interest and not because it was warned by the Bush administration that it stood to be branded as a terrorist state, the US has said.

Ajmal Amir Iman, the lone gunman captured for the Mumbai terror attacks, told residents of his village in Pakistan’s Punjab province during his last visit there that he was going away for jehad.

ULFA trying to build base in China: DGP
Guwahati, December 13
The banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is trying to build bases in the jungles of Yunan province of China just across the Assam-Myanmar border. Feeling threatened in Bangladesh, ULFA is exploring the possibility of establishing bases in the Yunan province of China, said the director general of the Assam police, G.M. Srivastava.

Navy repulses attack on vessel in Gulf of Aden, nabs 23 pirates
New Delhi, December 13
In another successful anti-piracy operation in the Gulf of Aden, an Indian Navy warship today not only repulsed an attack by pirates, but also nabbed 23 of the Somali and Yemeni brigands and seized arms, ammunition, navigation equipment and speedboats. This is the third successful action of the Navy in the past one month in the Gulf of Aden.

1 dies as security, anti-election protesters clash in Pulwama
57% turnout
Pulwama/Shopian, December 13
Amid anti-poll protests in parts of south Kashmir, 57 per cent of polling was registered in 11 constituencies of Pulwama, Shopian and Kathua districts in the state that went to polls in the fifth phase of elections today. One person was killed and at least six others injured in the clashes between security personnel and anti-election protesters at several places in Pulwama district.
