Yuvraj encore at Indore
Indore, November 17 The 26-year-old hit 118 to lift India out of trouble at 29 for three and to an imposing 292 for nine before denting England's fightback, putting the hosts 2-0 up in the seven-game series. England collapsed to 238 all out after Yuvraj ended a 96-run second-wicket partnership by removing Owais Shah (58) and Matt Prior (38) in successive overs before returning 4-28 bowling slow left-arm spin on a sluggish pitch. He returned to dismiss Andrew Flintoff (43) and skipper Kevin Pietersen (33) in the same over after their racy 74-run fourth-wicket partnership had kept alive England hopes before they lost four wickets for eight runs. "At 29-3 we definitely felt we had a chance (but) we probably slipped there," Pietersen said. "And after the Power Play I think Freddie and I took it quite nicely to get the momentum back but unfortunately we lost ourselves to Yuvraj. "He again played a fantastic game today, scoring a 100 and taking four for nothing, I mean the boy is playing good cricket." Yuvraj, who stroked 138 not out to set up India's crushing 158-run win in Friday's first contest of the seven-match series, took over after young paceman Stuart Broad's triple strike left the hosts reeling at 29 for three. He struck his 10th one-day hundred and added 134 runs for the fourth wicket with opener Gautam Gambhir, who made 70 for his second fifty of the series. Broad removed Yuvraj to return four for 55 but Yusuf Pathan hammered 50 not out from 29 balls to help India regain the initiative. Yuvraj again displayed sublime form, showing no signs of a back injury which flared up in his previous innings to pick up his second man-of-the-match award in a row. Broad, 22, gave England a superb start by removing opener Virender Sehwag (1) and Suresh Raina (4) in his first two overs before claiming Rohit Sharma (3). However, Yuvraj settled down with fellow left-hander Gambhir. He lofted Paul Collingwood's medium-pace for a straight six before pushing him to point for a single to reach his hundred, running with his bat held aloft and punching the air in delight. Yuvraj cracked 15 fours and two sixes with shots all around the wicket in a 122-ball effort before Broad had him caught behind in the 44th over. Gambhir underlined his fine form by reaching his 13th one-day fifty. Pietersen forced Gambhir play a sharp off-break onto the stumps and then effected one of two direct run outs. Shah scored his seventh ODI fifty to lead England's response in the company of Prior before Yuvraj trapped him leg before and bowled his partner. Flintoff hammered off-spinner Harbhajan Singh for three sixes to help take 21 runs in one over as he and Pietersen rattled up 59 runs in the final set of five overs with field restrictions. Yuvraj, whose confident caught behind appeal against Flintoff on four was turned down, trapped him leg before and bowled Pietersen three balls later to virtually end England's hopes. Sehwag took three wickets for 28 towards the end. The third ODI will be played in Kanpur on Thursday. — Reuters Scoreboard India: Gambhir b Pietersen 70 Sehwag b Broad 1 Raina c Patel b Broad 4 Rohit c Shah b Broad 3 Yuvraj c Prior b Broad 118 Dhoni b Collingwood 15 Yusuf Pathan not out 50 Harbhajan run out 8 Zaheer Khan run out 1 RP Singh b Harmison 4 Patel not out 0 Extras (b 3, lb 9, w 4, nb 2): 18 Total (for nine wickets in 50 overs): 292 FoW: 1-4, 2-15, 3-29, 4-163, 5-206, 6-239, 7-258, 8-261, 9-274 Bowling: Anderson 6-0-26-0 Broad 10-1-55-4 Flintoff 9-0-49-0 Harmison 7-1-50-1 Patel 5-0-37-0 Collingwood 8-0-43-1 Pietersen 5-0-20-1 England: Ian Bell run out (Raina) 1 Prior b Yuvraj Singh 38 Shah lbw Yuvraj 58 Pietersen b Yuvraj 33 Flintoff lbw Yuvraj 43 Collingwood c & b Harbhajan 2 Patel c Gambhir b Sehwag 20 Bopara c Raina b Pathan 3 Broad b Sehwag 22 Harmison st Dhoni b Sehwag 6 Anderson not out 1 Extras (lb 2, w 6, nb 3): 11 Total (all out in 47 overs): 238 FoW: 1-6, 2-102, 3-109, 4-183, 5-184, 6-187, 7-191, 8-222, Bowling: Zaheer 8-1-37-0 Munaf 7-0-31-0 RP 5-0-49-0 Yuvraj Singh 10-0-28-4 Harbhajan Singh 10-0-45-1 Sehwag 5-0-28-3 Yusuf Pathan 2-0-18-1. |
India-England ODI series Sourav Ganguly's retirement has left one spot vacant in the Indian Test batting line-up, and at the end of the Nagpur Test that place was pretty much open and there were more than a couple of candidates for that vacancy. Not any longer! That place will surely go to Yuvraj Singh after his second consecutive century against England. If the effort at Rajkot was a bludgeoning one, this one at Indore was one that showed his maturity. He came in to bat after India were three down for only 29, which actually begs the question why he was demoted after that blazing innings at Rajkot. Normally a big innings gets a promotion but here he was demoted down the order and he still delivered. Gautam Gambhir is another player who is going from strength to strength. His was an important partnership, since a wicket at that stage would have given England a big advantage, but he was careful in his shot selection and that is the main reason for his consistency. He has never been short on skill but his temperament in the past was suspect, simply because of his tendency to throw it away with a bad shot. Now after being out of the team for a while, Gambhir has become more selective about his shots and doesn't mind keeping some shots in cold storage for another day. His dismissal came as a surprise as he had just hit a beautiful six in the over, and then tried to play a nudge for a single resulting in an inside edge onto the stumps. He did better than in Rajkot and it won't be a surprise if he betters it in the next few games. Yuvraj did not make the mistake of thinking he was on 138, the score he had at Rajkot, when he came in to bat, for that is the surest way of inviting dismissal. Instead, he took his time and played himself in and then once he had got his eye in and had the measure of the pitch, he started playing the shots that he is known for. All bowlers came alike to him as he laid into them and that partnership gave India the steadying factor needed. It gave birthday boy, Yusuf Pathan, just the platform that he wanted. He had got out for a zero going for the big hits as per the team's needs in Rajkot, and here too he couldn't afford to dawdle. When it came to the final overs there aren't too many better finishers than him and his onslaught not only got India to that total that looked unlikely when they were 3 for 29, but also demoralised the England team. England's approach was hard to understand. They batted themselves in a situation that left the big hitters Pietersen and Flintoff too much to do. Matt prior took too long to get going and Shah had to try and score from both ends. Why Ravi Bopara is kept that low in the order when he isn't used as a bowler is baffling, and he is wasted at that number. He should be opening the batting with Bell, and Prior can be used down the order. The assault by Flintoff in the batting power play gave England some hope but it was too big a mountain to climb even for England's match winner. India were the better side again and look like dominating the series, but they must, however, guard against complacency. — PMG |
I am not just T20 player: Yusuf
Indore, November 17 ''I am willing to bat wherever I get the opportunity to serve the team the best,'' Yusuf told mediapersons after India's emphatic 54-run win over England in the second ODI here. Yusuf, whose crucial unbeaten half century down the batting order laid the foundation for a match winning total for India, also clarified that today was not his birthday as wrongly said by satisticians. ''I celebrated my (26th) birthday last month,'' he said. ''This performance will give me a lot of confidence and I dedicate my first ODI half century to my parents. ''We knew it was not an easy wicket to bat on and anything could happen later and I wanted to score as many runs as possible to give our team a good total in the end,'' he said. Yusuf, who usually opens the innings, came at number seven and smashed an unbeaten 50 to propel the team total to 292 for 9 and also picked up a wicket. He said though the opening partnerships did not work well today, the lower order batsmen rose to the occasion and did the job. ''Yes, unlike at Rajkot the opening partnerships did not get off to a good beginning. But it cannot happen every day and the others too need to contribute and did so today,'' he added. The October 23-born all rounder, who lasted only two balls in the first ODI at Rajkot when he was sent up the order, said today's victory was a team effort and it was important for him not to lose his wicket as batsmen realised that it was not as easy a wicket to bat on. He was of the view that it was difficult to choose between the two match-winning efforts of Yuvraj Singh in the first two matches (138 not out at Rajkot and 118 here today). ''Both were important efforts and both were match-winning ones. I enjoyed both his innings. Not only the opposition, but our own bowlers are not able to get him out in the net sessions,'' he said. Yusuf said he was not just a Twenty20 cricketer, ''this perception is not correct.'' ''I have played more three, four and one-day matches in domestic cricket and not as many Twenty20 games. I think the perception that I'm only a T20 player is wrong,'' he said. About his younger brother Irfan, he said it was up to the selectors to decide his fate in the team. ''Irfan is doing well in domestic cricket, but I cannot comment on his exclusion from the Indian team. It's up to the selectors (to pick him again for India duty),'' he added. — UNI |
Dhoni, Sehwag didn't expect 292
Indore, November 17 Happy with the way his teammates bounced back after being reduced to 29 for three at one stage, Dhoni said he was looking at a total of 250. "We were looking at a score of 250 but it was Yuvraj (Singh), Gautam (Gambhir) and Yusuf Pathan who made 292 possible," Dhoni said. Sehwag said he felt a modest 220 would be good enough on the two-paced track. "In fact, I sent message to Gautam that a score of 230-240 would be competitive here," Sehwag said. "The pitch was not easy to bat on, the ball was stopping before coming on to the bat. But thanks to Gautam, Yuvraj and of course Yusuf, we crossed the 290-mark," he said. Yuvraj (118) and Gambhir (70) put on 134 runs to steady the ship before Yusuf slammed an unbeaten 50 off just 29 balls to power India to a commanding total. Dhoni, meanwhile, was not surprised by Yusuf's power-hitting and said, "He was up to the mark. He is known for this kind of batting and it was expected of him." —

IPL may lead to player's revolt in England
London, November 17 According to media reports here, the deadlock might result in Kevin Pietersen and co refusing to sign their central
contracts. ECB chairman David Collier and CEO Giles Clarke returned last night after a round of failed talks with IPL chairman Lalit
Modi, much to the frustration of the players, who are keen to take part in the cash-rich league. "If the players are denied the chance to play in the
IPL, then Clarke is going to feel their wrath, no question," an agent, who represents some top players in the side, was quoted as saying in 'The Daily Mail'. "Clarke seems to be playing hardball with Modi when he has no bullets to fire. He has been backed into a terrible corner," he added. The IPL has made it clear that England's players would be welcome only if they commit to a substantial number of games and not the 15 days that the ECB is offering. "There is no sense in England players playing in the IPL for just two weeks," Modi has insisted all along. Collier and Clarke were in Mumbai yesterday to end the deadlock but nothing worthwhile came out of the talks and the participation of the English players next April's IPL looks highly unlikely. The newspaper said the IPL and the ECB officials could talk again in the coming couple of weeks but with the wait getting longer by the day for players, it is likely that may try some arm-twisting tactics of their by refusing to sign central contracts. —

Pak could switch home series to India: PCB
Karachi, November 17 “Pakistan cricket has already suffered a lot because of teams refusing to play at our venues. We are counting on India to break the ice,” Butt said today. “But if the Indians are not permitted by their government to tour Pakistan for any reason then we can look at the option of swapping the series with India.” Doubts have emerged over India’s tour to play three Tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20 game beginning in January after the Indian government stopped a junior hockey team from touring Pakistan at the last moment earlier this month over security concerns. Pakistan cricket has suffered heavily this year due to the refusal of teams and players to tour following a series of suicide bombings. In August, the International Cricket Council (ICC) postponed the Champions Trophy after facing a possible boycott from five of the eight teams in the field. — Reuters |

Abu Dhabi, November 17 Gayle (122) reeled off his 18th one-day hundred and second of the series to keep Pakistan’s total of 273 for six within sight until Iftikhar caused havoc in his second spell with four quick wickets. The Pakistan total revolved around good knocks from Younis Khan (101) and Misbah-ul-Haq (79no). Iftikhar was punished for 25 runs in his first spell of three overs before returning to pick up four wickets for nine runs in one devastating burst as the tourists slipped from 168 for one to 193 for six. The slump began when Iftikhar broke the dangerous second-wicket partnership of 151 between Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan who made a flawless 62 from 73 balls before he misjudged a leg cutter. Butcher still bitter as Maradona reunion looms
London, November 17 Maradona takes charge of the Argentine national team for the first time in a friendly against Scotland at Hampden Park on Wednesday. ''I'll never forgive him. It's not nice to lose a World Cup quarter-final under those circumstances, but that was 22 years ago and this isn't about that game,'' Butcher told Sky Sports. ''It is very interesting, very intriguing. But this is all about Scotland playing Argentina.'' Butcher was among the array of bemused England defenders left trailing in Maradona's wake that day for the Argentine's second goal, widely regarded as one of the best ever scored. But despite the bitter memory of Maradona's first goal in Argentina's 2-1 victory, Butcher thinks the south American nation have made a wise choice and that Maradona could have a similar impact to Jurgen Klinsmann when he was given the Germany job. ''He was the best player I've played against but, for me, Pele was the best I have seen,'' said Butcher. ''But to have somebody like Maradona coaching the national team, then that is fantastic for the Argentina players. ''Players do hold him in high regard and they will be keen to impress their new boss and their idol. It will probably work against Scotland on Wednesday. ''It is an excellent appointment for Argentina. It provides a focal point for the players, look at (Marco) Van Basten for Holland or (Jurgen) Klinsmann for Germany. ''I think it does galvanise you if you are being selected by the best player your country has ever produced.'' — Reuters |

JCT to play East Bengal on Nov 22
Chandigarh, November 17 The Ludhiana-based club have had mixed form in the league so far. After making a strong start to the season, which included an away win over Dempo FC, they have faltered a bit in the recent matches.
