Harbhajan, Zaheer keep Oz at bay
Bangalore, October 11 Responding to Australia's first innings total of 430, the hosts were gasping at a precarious 232 for seven before Harbhajan (54) and Zaheer (batting 35) spared them the blushes with a dramatic counter attack to take the score to a much healthier 313 for eight at close on an eventful third day. While most of the star batsmen fell cheaply on the dual-paced track at the Chinnaswamy stadium, the combative Harbhajan unleashed a barrage of strokes to notch up his fifth Test half century and give India a glimmer of hope to not only save the match but push for a victory. Harbhajan and Zaheer Khan put on a vital 80-run parnership for the eighth wicket to narrow down the lead and frustrate the Australians who seemed to be firmly in control of the proceedings at one stage. The Indians are still trailing Australia by 117 runs and their immediate task would be to reduce the margin as much as possible since they have to bat last on a track which was expected to deteriorate. With two days left, the Test match appears to be heading for a thrilling finish with both teams fancying their chances. Harbhajan, who managed to take just one wicket in Australia's first innings, made amends with the bat and fell to Watson at the fag end of the day, a knock which contained five boundaries and came off 110 balls. Rahul Dravid (51) and Sourav Ganguly (47), playing in his last Test series, came up with stubborn contributions after Mitchell Johnson had ripped through the top order in a hostile morning spell by accounting for Virender Sehwag (45) Sachin Tendulkar (13) and VVS Laxman (0). Had it not been for the astonishing rearguard action, the Indian innings could have folded much earlier. Johnson shattered the Indian hopes of capitalising on a solid start by claiming three wickets in the first hour's play. But it was paceman Brett Lee who drew the first blood when he trapped the left- handed Gautam Gambhir (21), who could add just one run to his overnight score. Johnson then took the centre stage as he dealt three quick blows with the Indians almost gifting their wickets. Sehwag stood rooted to the crease as he offered an outer edge to Hayden at first slip, Tendulkar chipped the ball to Cameron White at short cover while Laxman tentatively poked at a good length ball pitched on the off and seaming away to give wicketkeeper Brad Haddin simplest of catches. Rahul Dravid compiled a fighting fifty before returning back to the pavilion. However, he was not pleased with the leg before decision given without any hesitation by Pakistan umpire Asad Rauf. Dravid took 104 balls for his knock and helped himself with seven boundaries. Dhoni (9) joined the Bengal batsman after the fall of Dravid and the duo added 40 runs for the sixth wicket. Ganguly denies giving interview
Bangalore, October 11 Subsequently, Vengsarkar had reacted to the statement saying that he would answer Ganguly's tirade after the four-match Test series against Australia. In a statement issued Saturday morning, the former Indian skipper said, "The reports of an interview from a Bengali daily published in various newspapers are false. I have not given any interview of that sort to anyone. I would request you to clarify with me before publishing news from other sources." Ganguly had reportedly told a vernacular daily that he was being made a "sacrificial goat" and there was no point continuing with the game if he was treated in such a manner while some of the other players went scot-free. The 36-year-old's outburst had reportedly vitiated the atmosphere in the dressing room, as he had apparently trained his ire on Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been held responsible for ridding the national team of its ageing stars.

Harvey, Vignesh shine in Superstars’ win
Hyderabad, October 11 Riding on a spectacular 61-run partnership off just 22 balls by Harvey and Vignesh, Chennai Superstars defeated Dhaka Warriors by six wickets. Chasing a moderate target of 143 set by the Dhaka team, the Chennai openers set a solid base, which helped the middle order to reach the target in 18 overs. After Dhaka won the toss and elected to bat, consistent performance by Chennai’s bowlers restricted them to a moderate 142 for six in the floodlit match. Dhaka Warriors openers Shahriar Nafees and Nazimuddin started on an attacking note as they gathered nine runs from the first over of the match off R. Jesuraj. Nafees knocked Jesuraj for two boundaries in his over. But Dhaka’s luck
did not Nafees was dismissed by Jesuraj for 18 off 13 balls, while Nazimuddin was sent back to the pavillion by Vignesh for 20. Asif hearing adjourned
Mumbai, October 11 "Right through the day's hearing interim objections raised by Asif's advocate (Shahid Karim) on the maintainability of the case by the Tribunal was taken up and I have reserved my order on it for four or five days," said tribunal member and lawyer Shirish Gupte after the day's proceedings at the
cricket board's headquarters. Gupte said that Asif's team, consisting of lawyer Karim and British Sports Medicine specialist Dr Michael Graham, objected that the IPL had no locus standi to decide on the case as there was another anti-doping authority to deal with it. "Their objection is that the IPL Tribunal has no right to prosecute him or hear the case as there's another anti-doping unit to deal with it," said Gupte. "Recording of evidence and witnesses will start after four weeks, probably on November 11, but the date has not been decided," Gupte said. The three-member IPL Tribunal is constituted by Gupte, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and Dr Ravichandra Bapat, ex-vice chancellor of Mumbai University's Health Sciences. Asif will face a two-year ban if found guilty.

JCT thump Mohammedan Sporting
Ludhiana, October 11 The match started with both teams getting into their groove early on. It was the visiting MS side, who enjoyed the initial domination with Gurpreet and Sunday linking up beautifully to create a chance out of what seemed like otherwise ordinary play. Gurpreet, who was playing on the right flank, played an excellent through ball for Sunday, but the latter failed to capitalize on the opportunity and shot wide after being put under pressure by JCT defender Anwar. The next half hour was very cagey as both teams tried to get the elusive goal, but failed. The MS mid-field was run by an extremely charged up Tokumbo, who played anchor role and kept feeding forward line with measured through balls and crosses. JCT sprung back to life around the 40-minute mark as Akpele moved forward, into the MS half and then linked up well with Jagpreet to receive a cross in the six yard box, but could not provide the finish. Ultimately, in the dying moments of the first half, JCT began a move from the right flank that had Baljit Sahni at the end to force the home team into the lead with a thumping shot into the far corner of the goal. The second half was a different story altogether as the home team came out with a resolve and finally their target man Eduardo looked lively and sharp. They started beating the MS mid-field lock with some deft one-touch play. In the 52nd minute Edu missed a chance after beating three defenders and also the MS goalkeeper, but then in a bizarre fashion also missed the goal. But he started getting into his stride and had been looking threatening. Finally in the 68th minute, he chased down a through ball by Jagpreet and sped away from the MS defence. He then sidestepped MS goalkeeper Nasim to roll the ball into the back of the net. MS made some moves towards the end but the JCT defence performed their job like a well-oiled machine. JCT coach Sukhwinder Singh while talking to The Tribune said, “The team played really well. They dominated in the first half but we were relentless and were rewarded with a goal for it. I am also extremely pleased that the team kept a clean sheet and also kept their unbeaten start to the league intact.” But his counterpart Shabbir Ali was furious with the referee and said, “We deserved two penalties which were turned down. I would want to praise the home team for putting in a clinical performance but I feel they could have done without being so physical.” JCT’s Eduardo was adjudged the player of the match. |
Margao, October 11 The hosts scored through Man of the Match Wilton Gomes (25th) and substitute Nathaniel Amos (47th). The win, their third in-a-row, kept Sporting Clube at the top of the table with nine points from three matches while Mohun Bagan, who suffered their second defeat, have just one point. Striker Joychandra Singh, who gave a good account of himself, sounded the first warning for the Kolkata side as his shot hit the woodwork in the 25th minute. Sporting Clube surged ahead soon after. Joseph's measured cross from the left kept the defenders rooted to the ground as Wilton sneaked in from behind and dived full length to head the ball goalwards. Mohun Bagan left full-back N Mohanraj made a desperate attempt to keep the ball out but managed to find his own net. Mumbai FC stun Mahindra United
Mumbai: Mumbai Football Club continued their glorious run in the I-League as they scored an upset victory over Durand Cup winners Mahindra United by a solitary goal at the Cooperage football ground here today. The match-winner in the all-Mumbai clash was scored in the 23rd minute by medio K Kulothungan from close range off a cross from right sent by Subhas Chakraborty. This was Mumbai FC's third win on the trot in the league and was followed by upset away wins over Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, taking their points tally to nine points. For Mahindra, champions in 2005-06, the loss was their third in-a-row after |
Jeev fights back
New Delhi, October 11 Though Liang Wen-Chong of China repeated his overnight performance with a one- under 71 to stay ahead of the pack with an overall lead of 14-under 202, Australian Adam Blyth, who had a fantastic third round of 6-under 66, closed in on the leader with a total of 13-under 203 to make the final day's play tomorrow anybody's game. Blyth's compatriot Unho Park also fired a 6-under 66 to be just one point below at the third place for 12-under 204. Indian hopes now rest on Jeev Milkha Singh and Ashok Kumar who were the only two host players to figure among the top-ten. They share the fifth position with two others - Steven Tiley of England and Mark Brown of New Zealand. Lam Chih Bing of Singapore, who carded 5-under 67 for an overall tally of 10-under 206, was one point ahead of Jeev, who is on nine-under 207. Ashok Kumar also did a 4-under 68 today to maintain a glimmer of hope. Daniel Chopra of Sweden, who had climbed to the second position on day two, slumped to the 18th slot with a poor 2-over 74 while defending champion Jyoti Randhwa went out of the title race with a poor card of one-over 73. Jeev somewhat redeemed his poor display yesterday which had pushed him down from his second place perch to 19th position. No wonder, the smile was back on Jeev's countenance as his hopes of hitting the pay packet looks attainable now if he keeps up his good work on the morrow. "I played rock solid. But I played ahead of myself on the back nine...three bogeys and three birdies (on the back nine). Overall, I was very happy", Jeev said. Jeev said he was now with a chance to win the title, or at least finish among the top ten, which he has never done in the Indian Open. "On this course, anything is possible. Probably, the leader could be around 14-under, and I will be five behind. If I can shoot a five or a seven-under, I would be right up there. I need a good start", Jeev said with optimism. Had he done well on the back nine today, his score would have been much better. "The putting was the main thing today. My confidence was up and I was playing well. The main thing is to put four good rounds together", he noted. Jeev said tomorrow would be a really testing time "but I will stick to my mantra of 'process and routine'. If I get a good start, I can go for it", he summed up. |

Pune, October 11 The so-called "dress rehearsal" for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, CYG will give a platform to the Indian youth who are hoping to graduate to the big stage. While swimming, badminton and table tennis could fetch most medals for the hosts with a star-studded Indian line-up, shooting, boxing, wrestling and weightlifting have the potential to give few more medals in the event to be competed by 71 countries. Athletics, which boasts of the biggest Indian squad with 55 members, also have an Olympian in Poovamma Machettira Raju (400m and 4x400m) but it's the relay time which is the best bet to bag a gold, feels coach Suresh Babu. With Yuki Bhambri making it big post his junior Davis Cup stint where he was instrumental in India making the semifinals for the first time, India have bright chances in tennis as well, says coach Nandan Bal. — PTI |
