Rifles used to control teachers

AK-47 assault rifles, which are used by the security forces in anti-terrorism and other major combat operations, were used on the guest teachers protesting in support of their demands here on Sunday.

This was revealed in a preliminary investigation of the bullet fragments recovered from the body of at least one person injured in the incident, who is undergoing treatment at the local PGIMS.

Even the police authorities admitted that AK-47 rifles had been used to control the protesters, though they maintained that these rifles had been used only to fire in the air.

On the other hand, forensic sources asserted that fragments of AK-47 bullets had been recovered from bodies of those injured in the incident.

Though a definite conclusion in this regard can be reached only after a formal report is received, but according to forensic experts, the fragments recovered were of AK-47 rifle bullets.

It has also been learnt that specific information regarding the matter was promptly communicated to the state police authorities, who are believed to have taken a serious view of the matter.

Several persons who had sustained bullet injuries in the firing incident are undergoing treatment at the local PGIMS. These include Ramphal, Satbir, Subhash, Mohkam and Vimal.

Vimal (30) had received a major injury on a leg, which was pierced by a bullet. The bullet had passed through his thigh, breaking a bone. Several other persons had also received such major injuries in the incident.

According to reliable sources in the PGIMS, lead bullets have been recovered from the bodies of injured persons. These bullets and fragments have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Madhuban for ballistic examination.

The district as well as PGIMS authorities, however, remained tightlipped over the issue. A tense atmosphere prevailed in the town as well as among the local official circles.

V. Kamaraja, IGP, Rohtak range, conceded that AK-47 rifles were used to control the protesters, but only to “fire in the air”.
