Saini bought security equipment: Co-accused
Mohali, August 10
Anurag Saxena, a co-accused with former Punjab DGP S.S. Virk has alleged in a local court here that it was not S.S. Virk, but the current Vigilance Bureau chief Sumedh Singh Saini who was involved in the process of buying security equipment for the police department from him in 2001-2002.

SSP, Hoshiarpur, Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill has deputed the DSP, Garhshankar, to look into the complaint of Balwinder Kaur, principal, Doaba Public School, Parowal, regarding the disappearance of four students who had gone with 15 other students and a teacher of the school on an educational trip to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States of America.

Bhattal loyalists seek to meet Amarinder

The New Moti Bagh residence of former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in Patiala has become a centre of Punjab politics again after one-and-a-half years with Congress leaders and legislators, including loyalists of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, seeking appointments with him.

Capt’s new post not to affect SAD-BJP prospects: Badal

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said today there was no threat to prospects of the SAD-BJP alliance in the Lok Sabha elections following former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh being made chairman of the Election Campaign Committee.

The fates of Capt Amarinder Singh and Sukhbir Badal seem to be intertwined. Both have come to a stage where they will again have a face-off with each other for the leadership of Punjab. Former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has been given a chance to reclaim his lost mantle by the Congress which has cleverly put him in a perform-or-perish position by giving him charge of the party’s election campaign, but refused to give him total control of the party.

Debt-ridden farmer kills himself
Sangrur, August 10
Finding it difficult to withstand the burden of debts, 45-year-old farmer Gurmeet Singh of Kal Banjara village, near Lehragagga, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison a couple of days ago. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Sabha for withdrawal of plea against awards
Sangrur, August 10
Panchkula-based Pradeep Joshi has been appealed to withdraw his petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The petitioner alleged that the selectors had chosen themselves for the awards, being given by the Punjab Languages Department for excellence in literature  and journalism.

Generation at Nathpa Jhakri Dam comes to halt

The power generation at the 1,500-MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydel Power project in Himachal Pradesh has come to a halt as the dam has been closed due to accumulation of huge quantities of silt in the dam reservoir due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area of the project.

Freedom fighter dies in London
Ludhiana, August 10
Veteran freedom fighter Amarnath Desh Pandey died in London on Wednesday, according to information available here on Friday.He was 94.
