Jammu curfew lifted but clashes go on

Jammu, July 29
Even as the authorities lifted curfew, the clashes between protesters and the police continued in Jammu today.

At the Parade area, protests over the Amarnath land row turned violent in the evening, when angry protesters pelted stones and threw six petrol bombs at the police, which fired around 30 tear gas shells to disperse the mob. One of the protesters was arrested.

Reports of violent clashes were also received from Moti Bazaar and Raj Tilak Road.

Earlier, the protesters took to the streets in the morning, demanding restoration of the land to the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board and removal of Governor N.N. Vohra.

A massive procession, comprising over 3,000 people, started from the Parade area and after passing through Pacca Danga, Panjtirthi, Mubarak Mandi, Hari Market and Shahidi Chowk, culminated at the Residency Road.

The protesters reportedly damaged a vehicle of a government official outside the KC Residency Hotel. They also damaged electronic meters installed outside commercial establishments. Section 144 was still in force. Meanwhile, ollowing the death of Kuldeep Dogra, another person identified as Kamaljeet Chaudhary, a resident of Swankha Camp, Vijaypur, reportedly attempted suicide in neighbouring Samba district over the Amarnath land row.
