Jammu, July 28
Violent clashes continued in the city today, leaving at least 10 persons, including three policemen, injured. A strong mob took to the streets in Muthi, on the city outskirts, in the morning and pelted stones at the police.
In retaliation, the police lathicharged and fired tear gas shells to disperse the agitating crowd. The protesters set ablaze a police vehicle. The driver managed to escape unhurt.
After the incident, the police reportedly damaged some vehicles of Muthi residents, parked outside their homes. They also allegedly thrashed women and children. SP (Rural) K.R. Chaurasia has denied the charges.
The violent protests also took place at the Parade area. The protesters burnt effigies of Governor N.N. Vohra and National Conference president Omar Abdullah.
The agitators pelted stones besides targeting the police personnel with firecrackers. They attempted to torch a water tanker.
The police used water canon and tear gas shells. Some cops were also spotted pelting stones at the protesters.
The curfew was, however, relaxed in the old city areas like Parade in the evening. Deputy commissioner Mandeep K. Bhandari said they had already extended the relaxation once and were monitoring the situation on hourly basis.
Earlier, the authorities attached SDPO (Bakshi Nagar) M.L. Kaith to the district Police Lines. Kaith had earned the protesters' wrath following the alleged police action while shifting the body of Kuldeep Dogra from Jammu to Bishnah on Thursday.
A magisterial inquiry into the incident has already been ordered.
