Power Pinch
Amritsar, July 23 The agitating residents raised slogans against the government for its failure to provide proper power supply to them. They threatened to gherao Chief Minster Parkash Singh Badal who would be coming to Amritsar tomorrow for inaugurating a number of development projects, including the long-pending repair of Batala Road. The residents alleged that the unscheduled power cut and faulty supply had made their life miserable even as the alternative appliances like invertors had become useless as these did not get charged in view of longer power cuts. — OC |

Delhi Delight
Hoshiarpur, July 23 A large number of party workers assembled at the residence of former minister Naresh Thakur and distributed sweets to mark the occasion. Addressing the gathering, Thakur described the victory as the success of secular forces. Stability could only be maintained through single party rule in the country, he said. “A large number of the constituents of regional parties of the ruling group create obstacles in taking decisions to make the country prosperous,” Thakur said. The Leftists had enjoyed the benefits of the ruling party for more than four years of the UPA regime without any accountability to the public. There should be two national-level political parties in the country to establish democracy in India. He appealed to the voters to avoid regional political parties in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections. — OC |

Cong pips SAD-BJP combine in MC chief post race
Nawanshahr, July 23 Jinderjit Kaur of the ruling SAD-BJP alliance, however, had to be content with the post of junior vice-president. In the house of 17 members, the Congress managed to win 11 seats in the MC poll held last month. But the Congress house saw a division on the post of president. Former president Lalit Mohan Pathak (Ballu), Vijay Kumar Bhountha, Rajinder Chopra and Chet Ram Rattan were the front-runners for the post. The SAD-BJP alliance tried to make a dent in the Congress group so that a candidate of the ruling alliance could be made president but it failed in “floor management”. To execute its plan, the ruling alliance managed to get the election postponed to Monday. The postponement of the election gave rise to speculations in the town. But the Congress ultimately managed a good show. Ex- Congress MLA Parkash Singh and district Congress chief Kuldip Rana succeeded in their move to put forth the name of Rajinder Chopra as a consensus candidate and the SAD-BJP alliance had no other option left than to endorse it as a
unanimous election. Though the town is considered a traditional Congress citadel, it had to face unprecedented reverses during the previous assembly poll. |
