Srinagar, July 16
Two militants of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) and a cop were killed and 10 security personnel, including an Army officer and a CRPF’s deputy commandant, injured in an encounter at Warpora village in Sopore today.

The encounter started yesterday and ended this afternoon after the three-storey house in which the militants were hiding collapsed following heavy exchange of fire. The dead militants were identified as Hilal Sufi from Warpora, “chief financial commander” of the HuM, and Ali Raza, a district commander, both from Pakistan.

On receiving a tip-off regarding the presence of militants in Warpora, a police team assisted by the CRPF stormed the house. The heavily-armed militants opened fire. The militants also lobbed a grenade at the security personnel.

A CRPF official said special police officer (SPO) Abdul Rashid of the Special Operations Group (SOG) was killed while Lt Col Saniv Kumar of the 22 Rashtriya Rifles and Dy Commandant Jatinder Singh of 179 Battalion of the CRPF suffered injuries, but they were out of danger.
