Former Chief Justice of India, Justice Y.V. Chandrachud, died here this morning after a brief illness. He was 88.The late judge is survived by his wife Prabha and son Dhananjay Chandrachud, who is a sitting judge at the Bombay High Court.
According to sources, Chandrachud fell ill on Saturday shortly after celebrating his 88th birthday. He was rushed to the Bombay Hospital, where he breathed his last this morning.
Justice Chandrachud was a judge of the Bombay High Court from 1961 and was elevated to the Supreme Court in 1972. He was appointed Chief Justice in 1978 and remained in that post till his retirement in 1985.
