Guwahati, June 9
The 12-hour dawn-to-dusk Assam bandh called by the opposition political parties, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Left parties, against hike in fuel prices and spiralling prices of essentials paralysed life throughout the state today.

Business establishments, educational and financial institutions remained closed in wake of the bandh. There was skeletal presence in government offices despite directives issued by the state government yesterday to keep the government offices functioning in defiance of the bandh call given by the opposition political parties.

While work in some of the tea estates in eastern Assam areas was affected by the bandh, there was business as usual in the oil industry with offices of Oil India Limited and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in eastern Assam oil belts functioning normally.

Transportation, including public transport vehicles and trucks, were off the road in Guwahati and other parts of the state. The city bus owners' associations here also gave call for ‘chakka’ jam today in protest against fuel prices hike.

The police said no incident of violence was reported from any part of the state during the bandh period.
