2,226 constables pass out
Madhuban (Karnal), June 8 Besides imparting rigorous training for mob control, the recruits for the first time were made computer savvy. As a mark of the upcoming techno-savvy force, the constable who topped the police training, Ankush Kumar, was awarded a laptop whereas the runners-up, Surender Kumar and Anil Kumar, were presented digital cameras. After inspecting the passing-out parade, DGP Ranjiv Dalal lauded the role of the HPA, Madhuban. He said the state had planned several welfare, modernisation plans and housing facilities to make the Haryana police ready to serve the public with a more humane force. Director, HAP, V.N. Rai said efforts were being made to bring a qualitative change in the force. Later, Dalal revealed that in order to strengthen the police system, the Haryana authorities had proposed to employ an additional force of nearly 20,000 fresh recruits in the next five years. At present, there are 45,000 sanctioned posts. The DGP admitted that the force was overburdened with multiple duties from law and order to traffic to VIP visits. He said the entire force might soon be equipped with mobile phones by the state for better communication. Dalal revealed that in view of future recruitment and training programmes, the third police academy, after Madhuban and Bhondsi, would soon be raised in Rohtak district. Nearly 200 acres at Sunarian village, 10 km from Rohtak, had already been acquired whereas project of acquisition of another 200 acres was underway. “It is really heartening to see that the educated youth had shown interest in joining the force. It should be considered as a step towards improvement in the image of the state police,” he added. Dalal showed his keen interest in holding the next passing-out parade outside the HPA at district level for image building of the force. |

TB camp for babas on June 12
Kurukshetra, June 8 A random survey has shown that most of the self-styled babas, thronging the tirtha, are afflicted with chronic cough and blood in the sputum, indicative of tuberculosis (TB), without knowing it. Doctors, however, do not rule out severe bronchitis or even cancer since most of these babas are addicts also. Sources in the Kurukshetra Development Board (KDB) said the fact came to light during the on-going kar seva to clean the ghats of the sarovars and its suspected prevalence was first noticed by one of their own officials. During the clean-up operation, an officer, during one of his rounds on the ghats, noticed one of the many babas spitting blood. Alarmed, he asked his staff to carry out a random check by interacting with these babas, who have made the ghats and open grounds their home. “With as many as 2,000 such babas in the entire area and a mammoth task on hand, the staff interacted with only a few of them and realised that there were others suffering from the same symptoms,” says deputy director, KDB, Rajesh Purohit. Realising that the babas would be unwilling to be ferried to hospital, the KDB urged the health authorities to hold a camp at the Brahm Sarovar, where the babas usually spend their time. KDB chief executive officer Sanjeev Verma confirmed that a camp to assess the extent of spread of TB was being organised outside the KDB office. “We made a chance discovery and are investigating the matter. The TB officer will shortly hold a camp to arrive at the real figures,” he said. The first-ever camp for these babas is slated to be held on June 12. |
