GNDE students protest against police inefficiency

Students of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College staged a protest today inside the premises of the college against the failure of city police to arrest the absconding boys involved in the murder of Rajdeep Singh, a final year student of electrical engineering.

English news channels have gone off the air for the residents of Rajguru Nagar, thanks to poor cable services in the area for the past few weeks. Residents of the area rue that the entry of a new cable-service provider has worsened things. Several complaints to the cable operator have yielded no result, they said.

Suicide by men on the rise: GRP

More men than women have committed suicide before a speeding train in the district this year. Data available of first three months states 17 persons have ended their lives prematurely on different tracks in the district. Of them, 14 were males.

Land encroached upon by bigwigs: Advocate

Doraha, May17
Advocate Tarlochan Singh Sethi of Doraha has alleged that a portion of the road from water tank to Government Senior Secondary School has been encroached upon by a few political bigwigs. He said as per the information received from the Municipal Council on August 29, 2007, the road in this stretch was 20.16 feet wide in 2004.But, when Sethi approached it again on September 14, 2007, it stated that the road was 28.52 feet wide.

Apprehending tension during the local Gurdwara Singh Sabha’s governing body election for the post of president and other office- bearers, scheduled to take place tomorrow, the district administration has directed authorities to tighten the security in the town. Steps were taken to prevent any untoward incident when two groups, vying for control over the religious place, announced nomination of their own candidates.

Woman dies of burn injuries
Ludhiana, May 17
A woman sustained burn injuries when her sari caught fire while she was working in a kitchen in a Muslim colony near the Sharepur Chowk. Two of her children are sill in critical condition. The incident occurred at around noon when Sulekha (25), who was a synthetic sari and clothes hanging nearby, caught fire. Her two children Saurabh (6) and six-month-old daughter Rani sustained burn injuries.

It also plans to open 26 more branches, including three in Punjab, in this financial year. PU Sports Quota Scheme
400 turn up for selection trials 

Ludhiana, May 17
More than 400 boys turned up on the second day today to attend trials conducted by the Punjab Sports Department at Guru Nanak Sports Complex and the Punjab Agricultural University campus grounds. The trials were conducted to select players for seeking admission to various colleges affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh, under its sports quota scheme. At least 450 seats (boys and girls) have been reserved in the three universities namely Panjab University, Chandigarh, Punjabi University, Patiala, and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
