Attacked by mob, cops fire into air
Tribune News Service

Karnal, May 10
Following an attack on the Nissing police station late last night by an unruly mob, the police had to open fire into the air to disperse it. Though no one sustained injuries, windows and boards at the station were damaged when the crowd threw stones.

The incident took place at around at 10 pm when two groups of youths from two nearby villages quarrelled over some petty issue. One of the youths was allegedly beaten up near the Nissing police station, about 20 km from here.

Karnal police chief A.S. Chawla said policemen tried to protect the youth who was beaten outside the police station by certain villagers. The badly injured youth was given shelter by the police.

However, the villagers turned agitated and blocked traffic.

Later, the unruly mob, some of them in an inebriated condition, started throwing stones at the police station. He confirmed that six rounds were fired into the air to control the mob.

He added that a case had been registered against the youths.
