Arjun invites wrath of partymen
Our Political Correspondent

New Delhi, May 10
After his remarks on inner party functioning and loyalty, human resource development minister Arjun Singh is coming under attack from his Congress colleagues.

Party president Sonia Gandhi set the tone when she gave him the proverbial cold shoulder when the two leaders came face to face for the first time after Arjun Singh’s statements kicked off a storm in the Congress.

They shared a dais at the convocation ceremony of Jamia Hamdard University, but there was no interaction between the two leaders through out the two-hour ceremony.

University vice-chancellor S. Ahmad was seated between Sonia Gandhi and the HRD minister.

The Congress president made it abundantly clear that Arjun Singh’s recent utterances have not gone down well with her.

In her address, she singled out Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for praise, saying he has put his personal imprint on the initiatives on expansion of infrastructure for higher education. There was no mention of the minister concerned, Arjun Singh.

Taking a cue from the party leadership, AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh made a veiled attack against the HRD minister.

Dubbing Arjun Singh’s remarks as unfortunate, Digvijay Singh said he did not know on what basis he had spoken about the disarray in the party decision-making process.

He pointed out that the HRD minister was a senior Cabinet minister and a member of the core committee and of the Congress Working Committee.
