Land rates up in Noida

Noida, May 1
In the 150th Board meeting of the Noida Authority held today, land rates for residential, industrial and commercial properties were hiked by 20 to 25 per cent. This decision of the Board was along the expected lines, according to informed circles. The minimum residential rates will be from Rs 12,000 to Rs 33,000 per sq mt and for the group housing, it will be Rs 17,000 to Rs 45,000 per sq mt.

According to chief executive officer, Mohinder Singh of Noida Authority, the actual receipts of the authority for the financial year 2007-08 were of the order of Rs 3,332 crore as compared to the target amount of Rs 3,035. As per the report of financial progress presented to the board, receipts were at 111 per cent while revenue receipts were at 106 per cent which reflected a good financial progress, CEO said.

The Noida Authority will be laying stress on development of urban infrastructure like building flyovers, underpasses, metro rail, setting up of an ultra-modern multi-speciality faculty district hospital, setting up of educational institution, etc. A sum of Rs 53 crore has been approved for development of infrastructure viz roads, sewerage, drinking water, etc in all Noida villages.

The compensation for farmers’ land acquired for development has also to be increased as per the government decision.

For commercial sectors, except sector–18, revised commercial rates will be from Rs 55,000 to Rs 1,70,000 per sq mt, the CEO informed. For plots of 10,000 sq mt area and above, the reserve price has been fixed at Rs 1 lakh. In all, Noida town has been divided into five categories of commercial plots.

The hike in industrial rates has to be competitive as compared to rates in other states, the chief executive officer said.

The Board has taken the decision that allotment of 600 plots in disputed residential scheme of 2004 will be made through a fresh lottery after the receipt of orders from the High Court. The plots will however be allotted on current rates, the CEO said.

The CEO said sports city was being set up where facilities and infrastructure of international standard for all major sports and athletics will be developed. Some modern multi-level and underground parking lots are likely to come up in the town to tackle the complex problem of parking in Noida, the CEO added.

Kamlesh Agarwal to be extradited

New Delhi, May 1
The Delhi High Court today dismissed an appeal by Kamlesh Agarwal, who killed his cousin Deepa Agarwal in the US in 1999, paving the way for his extradition to that country to stand trial for the murder.

A division bench of justices Vikramjit Sen and Rajiv Sahai Endlaw dismissed Agarwal’s appeal, in which he had challenged the orders of the lower court allowing his extradition.

Kamlesh has an option of approaching the Supreme Court. Deepa, 20, a student of University of Central Florida, was murdered in her home in Orlando, Florida, by Kamlesh, who fled to India a year later and has been here since.

Her decomposed body was found “sealed” in a cardboard carton in the bedroom closet nine days after the murder.

The autopsy report confirmed the cause of death as fracture of the spine from a blow by a blunt instrument. Several knife wounds were reportedly spotted on the body, suggesting a “violent altercation” before death.

The suspicion fell on Kamlesh, then 22 and studying computer science in the same university.

During the investigation, a neighbour told the police that on the fateful night she heard the sound of a woman screaming from Deepa’s apartments. This was followed by “thumps” - as if “something was being shoved against the wall”.

But before investigators could nab Kamlesh, he fled from the US on July 12, 2000.

Two days later, the police in India acting on an Interpol alert arrested him from a hotel in Mumbai where he was staying under the name of Pankaj Saraf.

A month later, a grand jury in the US charged Kamlesh with “first-degree murder” and ordered that he stand trial. In September 2000, the state of Florida forwarded an extradition request to India.

In October 2002, an inquiry report by the additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court here recommended Kamlesh’s extradition, citing “prima facie” evidence of murder against him. — IANS
