Brother-in-law held for businessman’s murder
New Delhi, April 14 According to sources, the arrested have admitted to the crime. According to the police, Dinesh Kumar Mittal had hired killers — Mohammad Haroon and Mohammad Parvaz to eliminate Arun. Mohammad Haroon, an employee of Dinesh Kumar Mittal, clinched the deal. Property dispute is said to be the reason behind the murder. Dinesh Kumar Mittal has paternal property worth crores at different locations in the Capital. After his father’s death, he suspected that Arun might try to sell the property. He also got to know that his sister was fraudulently trying to grab his father’s fixed deposits worth over Rs 10.5 crore. “Irked by the acts of his sister and brother-in-law, Dinesh contacted Haroon and hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Arun,” said Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal. Mohammad Parvaz was apprehended from Jamia Nagar on April 12. He disclosed that Dinesh Kumar Mittal had contacted him and his associate Afroz in January this year to eliminate Arun Gupta. They were offered Rs 10 lakh for it. Dadwal added that the killers had received an advance of Rs 5 lakh for executing the crime along with the photographs of Arun Gupta and his wife. “Initially, Mohammad Parvaz and Afroz had planned to kill Arun Gupta, but later they hired Ible Hassan for Rs 2 lakh,” he said. However, Ible could not execute the plan, as he was arrested in another crime after two days. Then Mohammad Parvaz gave the contract to his brother-in-law, Junaid. Junaid along with Shakeel and Abu Zar arrived on two motorcycles with weapons. “They waited outside Arun’s house in Kalkaji and shot him while he was leaving his residence in a car,” said Dadwal. |

Government gets tough with
foodgrain hoarders
New Delhi, April 14 “Nobody is going to be spared if found guilty of violating the storage norms. Criminal proceedings will be initiated against traders for not maintaining the stock limit provisions,” Vijay Dev, the Delhi government’s food and civil supplies commissioner, told IANS. As per the norms, a licensed trader can store up to 1,000 quintals of wheat and 2,000 quintals of pulses at any given point of time. The city government is short-listing the wholesale traders and will randomly check their storehouses. The Centre’s cabinet committee on prices (CCP) on March 31 had urged all state governments to impose the stock limit norms so that prices of essential commodities do not rise on account of shortages caused by hoarding. Non-compliance with stock norms create artificial shortage of food grains, leading to price rise, the official said. Delhi’s food and civil supplies minister Haroon Yusuf Sunday alleged that some unscrupulous elements, including the ruling Congress’ political rivals, were trying to create artificial crisis of essential goods in the city. “There is shortage of essential commodities in the city, but efforts are being made to create artificial crisis of food items in the market. It is being done in connivance with our rivals,” Yusuf told reporters at his residence here. Raids were conducted on Sunday at various godowns for edible oils, rice, pulses, and other cereals. The government has so far raided over 250 places since the drive was launched on Saturday. The drive will resume on Tuesday. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday held an informal meeting of her cabinet and reviewed the price situation in the city. It has become an embarrassment for the Congress, which has decided to sell edible oil at Rs 55 to Rs 60 per litre through 25 outlets. The government has formed some 60 teams to conduct raids at the primary wholesale and retail markets like Chandni Chowk, Lawrence Road, Alipur, Azadpur, Najafgarh, Narela, and Krishna Nagar. Some 7,000 quintals of pulses were recovered from godowns in Lawrence Road. Teams from the weights and measures department of the city government on Saturday also raided godowns for gas cylinders and prosecuted around 46 people after carrying about 100 inspections. The issue of price-rise is haunting the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government, as the city is scheduled to elect a new assembly in November this year. Price rise was even discussed last week at a Congress co-ordination committee meeting. AICC general secretary Ashok Gehlot, Delhi Congress president JP Aggarwal, Union minister of state Ajay Maken, Delhi ministers AK Walia and RK Chauhan and legislator Tajdar Babar attended the meeting. — IANS |

Dayal Singh College refuses land for Metro
New Delhi, April 14 “The Delhi Metro has resorted to high handedness. They are hell-bent on taking our land meant for developing college infrastructure. But we will not allow them to do so, as our protest is for a larger cause,” said Sachin N, president of the Dayal Singh College Teachers Association. “After the Supreme Court verdict (last week) on reservation for other backward classes (OBCs), we are going to construct a girls’ hostel, additional classrooms and laboratories. If Metro takes our land, it will be impossible to provide even minimum infrastructure to our students,” Sachin told IANS. He said that the Delhi Metro is trying to “grab nearly 10,000 square metres of our college land for construction of a Metro station”. Sachin, who teaches English literature, said the college, which was originally established in Lahore and shifted out to New Delhi after the partition, had played a role in India’s freedom movement. “We are in Lodi Road for nearly 50 years and Delhi Metro cannot take away the land of an academic institution that imparts education to over 5,000 students,” Sachin said. —

Army doctor fakes suicide to elope; lands in jail
New Delhi, April 14 In between, the doctor, a major in the Army Medical Corps (AMC) even set up practice as a cancer surgeon at a hospital in Sangli in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. So confident was he of the ruse that he didn’t even think of changing his name. The story, details of which have just come to light, begins last June when the major, then posted at an army hospital in Assam’s Tinsukia district, crafted what he thought was an ingenious ploy to quit the army. The officer’s car was found on the banks of the Brahmaputra river with a “suicide” note saying he was unhappy with his life and was taking the “extreme step”. Three months later, MI sleuths tracked him down to a private hospital in Sangli, where he had begun life anew as a surgeon. The major was arrested in September 2007 and cashiered from service earlier this year. Detailed investigation and surveillance by a team of MI officers had led to the arrest, but the missing link in the story was the wife of a colonel from the Regiment of Artillery who had also disappeared from Tinsukia at the same time and was found to be living with the major as his “wife” in Sangli. The names of the two individuals have been kept under wraps given the sensitive nature of the case. Sources say the dual disappearances raised the antennae of the MI, which “meticulously” followed this lead. After zeroing in on the major in Sangli, an MI team established a surveillance network and exposed the officer. Investigations revealed that the major, whose wife was posted on a UN mission, fell in love with the wife of a colonel who was also posted abroad on a UN mission - and cooked up a plan to desert the army and begin life afresh. — IANS |

DMRC builds 3 towers to elevate power supply
New Delhi, April 14 The elevated metro would be commissioned by December 2009. The towers built by the DMRC are three-fourth of Qutub Minar (72.5 metres). DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said that The towers were erected in a record time of 15 days without any disruption of power supply to residents of Patparganj and Geeta Colony, which get power supply through these lines. The work was executed at a cost of Rs 2 crore. “Since such work had never been done in Delhi before, the design for the system was taken from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) and the clearance for it was obtained from the Delhi electrical inspector. The total length of electricity lines between towers built by the Metro is 890 metres,” Dayal informed. The new towers will rejuvenate electrical supply in the area, as the life of all Metro structures is 120 years. The wiring will ensure better transmission and will be a boon for residents of Lalita Park, as the old transmission lines almost touched the roofs of their houses thus, posing a danger especially during the rainy season. The new transmission lines will have adequate clearance from these buildings. Moreover, one of the roads in Lalita Park was 4 metres wide on either side, as one of the towers was in the middle of the road. Now that this tower has been removed, the road has become 14 metres wide without any disruption on the road. |

715 high-rise buildings fail to comply with fire safety norms
New Delhi, April 14 “We had identified a total of 2,377 high-rise buildings and issued notices through the press to those failing safety standards,” chief fire officer RC Sharma told reporters on the sidelines of the Fire Service Week from April 14-20. High-rise building is one that is 15 metres and more in height. About 483 buildings were found to be complying with the norms of the total number in city. “We had to disconnect the essential services like electricity and water supply to about 715 buildings as per the Delhi Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Act. Other buildings are in different stages, like height verification, court cases and some of them are sealed,” Sharma added. The 86-year-old organisation is also in an expansion mode. “Currently, we have 43 fire stations across Delhi and the number will be increased to 70 by the end of this year. In May, about eight fire stations will be ready for inauguration,” Sharma said. The organisation will also be adding 15 more water tenders to its current fleet of 139 and provide 600 protective suits to its firemen. The increase in the number of vehicles - mainly cars - catching fire on Delhi roads has not escaped the notice of the organisation. “Earlier these were rare incidents. But off late, a lot of vehicles have been catching fire. So far, no vehicle company has come to us and it is something to be looked into technically,” Sharma said. “The reasons can be anything, ranging from vehicles having fittings other than from authorised dealers to ill-fitted cooking gas cylinders used in the vehicle,” Sharma said. Like in the past, the organisation will go to schools during the Fire Service Week with the motto — “Fire Prevention: Do it for life”. “We will be conducting evacuation drill in high-rise buildings, other buildings such as schools, hospitals, cinema halls in different parts of the Capital,” Sharma said. — IANS |

30% youth take to sports: ASSOCHAM
New Delhi, April 14 However, not surprisingly, a majority of those interviewed preferred to opt for high profile and high earning game of cricket. The study had also interviewed a cross section of youth in the major cities of Maharashtara, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and the findings were similar. The study ‘Sports: A Career Path for Youths in States’ was based on a survey of over 760 youths. The study, however, revealed that over 69 per cent rural and tribal youths from states like Orissa, Punjab, Chattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Kerala, Goa, North-Eastern States and Uttarakhand see sports as a lucrative career as most of them get jobs in railways, state government departments, PSUs, corporate houses, etc. The study also warns that in future, hockey, football, archery, shooting, boxing, weightlifting will lose their sheen among the rural youth as cricket’s quick earnings are attracting more and more young men towards this game. The key factors for this negative response among youths from these major states comprise the lack of corporate sponsorships for the games like boxing, athletics, hockey, football, archery, failure of various urban sports programmes promoted by the ministry of youth affairs and sports, lack of marketing and awareness campaigns and the huge corporate money garnered by the cricket and golf players, says ASSOCHAM president Venugopal N. Dhoot. The other reason for this depressing scenario is that corporates have been totally lukewarm towards extending sponsorship to games like hockey, football, athletics, boxing and weightlifting. The study also revealed that over 30% of urban youths had no knowledge even about any academic courses run by SAI-Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education and Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports. The study says that over 78 per cent of respondents suggested total revamping of the sports programme and designing of an urban sports programme on the lines of the rural and tribal sports programmes in major metros, emerging cities and towns. |
