Pranab Mukherjee today urged Tibetan spiritual leader the
Dalai Lama not to do anything that could “hurt” India’s
ties with China while staying here as country’s “guest”.
In a firm yet polite message to the Tibetan exiled leader,
Mukherejee said, “He is a respected guest and the Dalai Lama
can stay here as India’s guest, but he should not do
anything that harms India’s diplomatic ties with China”.

As the daughter and
relatives of the late Mam Chand Singla today disputed
the official claim that the entire family of the
affluent Pehowa trader had committed suicide due to
debt, the state government has agreed to hand over the
case to the CBI.

IIMs, IITs also plan hike in fees
New Delhi, April 1
With IIMs hiking their
fees, the IITs have proposed a similar step to augment their
resources. “There is a proposal to hike the fee. But the
final decision will come from the government,” Prof Surendra
Prasad, Director of IIT Delhi, said.

Temperamental fast
bowler Shoaib Akhtar was banned for five years by the
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) today for repeated disciplinary
violations. Board chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf told a news
conference the suspension was imposed on the recommendation
of the PCB disciplinary committee and the paceman had the
right to lodge an appeal.

determination about to get tougher New Delhi,

The union government is
mulling yet another amendment in the Pre-Conception and
Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention
of Misuse) Act of 1994. The idea is to further strengthen
the Act to deter sex determination, which continues unabated
despite stringent measures contained in the Act.

Herald shuts down New Delhi, April 1
The National Herald founded
70 years ago by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru
today published its last editorial as it “temporarily
suspended” operations. The Congress party, which finances the
paper, is reportedly considering the feasibility of relaunching
the newspaper with modern technology. The editorial department
of the English edition did not have a computer.

National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) to all districts
of the country and also announced the setting up of an ombudsman

While pointing out several
infirmities in the acquisition process of aircraft for the Indian Air
Force’s VIP squadron, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has
revealed that the IAF has been ferrying the country’s leaders in
aircraft that have been unsuitable for VIP flights for the past four
years. Stating that the process deviated from laid down procedures and
recognised norms of propriety, the CAG, in its latest report has brought
out that supplies valuing 50 million dollars were contracted without the
benefit of competition.
