Adding credence to the
prospects of a snap general election later this year, union
finance minister P. Chidambaram proposed in his General Budget
for 2008-09 a Rs 60,000-crore debt-relief package benefiting
four crore farmers. He also proposed to raise the income tax
exemption limit to Rs 150,000 thereby giving every assessee a
relief of at least Rs 4,000.
Education
gets big boost New Delhi,
February 29
With the 11th Five Year
plan giving special focus on education, the government today
earmarked a whopping over Rs 38,702 crore to the sector in the
Union Budget 2008-09, showing a massive increase of over Rs
9,000 crore. A sum of Rs 27,850 crore has been provided for
school education as compared to last year’s revised estimate
of Rs 23,191.35 crore.
Sensex falls Mumbai, February 29
The Budget 2008-09 gave mixed
signals to markets but the proposal to hike the short-term capital gains
tax did not go down well as the benchmark Sensex dipped by more than 240
points today.
Kashmir
walks free on Monday Islamabad, February 29
Indian
prisoner Kashmir Singh, who had spent 35 years on death row in Pakistani
jails, is expected to walk free on Monday following the approval of his
