Chandigarh, February 22
The Punjab government is trying to find a way out of the controversy it has landed into after IG Rajinder Singh moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking a stay on the promotion of his batchmates - 1982 batch of the Punjab cadre. The High Court granted stay and sought a status report.
The government today asked DGP N.P.S. Aulakh to inform how many posts of additional director-general of police (ADGP) were vacant.
Rajinder had claimed that he was being ignored for the promotion as ADGP, while his batchmates, Sanjiv Gupta, Sumedh Singh Saini and Suresh Arora, were being considered.
Rajinder said four posts of the ADGP were vacant in Punjab and there was no reason to deny him a promotion.
Sources in the government said the case of Rajinder and the number of vacancies was discussed at a high-level meeting, where the DGP was asked to provide the number of vacancies.
In case there were four vacancies, the same would be conveyed to the High Court, said the sources, while adding that the government also wanted a way out of the controversy as it was having an adverse impact on the bureaucracy and the police.
Rajinder has levelled allegation that he was being denied promotion as he had registered cases against Sukhbir Badal and was being victimised now.
