PAU staff spit anger on govt

Ludhiana, February 22
Members of the Confederation of PAU Pensioners, the PAU Employees Union, the PAU Fourth Class Workers’ Union and the PAU Teachers’ Association today held a rally in front of Thapar Hall to protest against the non-release of pensions from the past three months. Addressing the gathering, speakers pointed out that in the absence of pension, which is the sole source of livelihood for many retired PAU employees, they were being forced to lead lives full of hardships.

In the ripe age of 108 years, this man is forced to make rounds of the police department seeking to reclaim his 20 marlas of land allegedly illegally occupied by a nephew in Hussainipur village in the district. Walking with great difficulty with the help of a raw stick, the aged man, Sohan Singh of Lakhowal village, told Ludhiana Tribune in the corridors of the police station that he made umpteen requests to cops to help him but no one was listening.

Advocates: Extend remand in jails

Increasing incidents of undertrials fleeing from court complexes and during transit from jail to courts has highlighted the need for taking preventive measures. One such step could be introducing video-conferencing or deputing judicial magistrates to visit jails periodically to extend the remand of undertrials.

Three persons were killed in a blast yesterday in Prem Steel & Metals Ltd, Amloh Road, here when a factory worker Chander Sekhar (40), resident of Adamgarh (Uttar Pradesh)was cutting the scrap with the help of a gas cutter and the blast took place. It was so severe that truck Driver Bakhsish Singh of Salani village and a worker Surat Singh (40) of Machhrai Khurd village, who were standing nearby, were also killed.

Veerpal new LIT chief

Veerpal Singh, joint commissioner, Municipal Corporation, has been appointed as administrator, Ludhiana Improvement Trust. The orders of Local Bodies Department about his appointment came here today. He will swap the post with Mohinder Pal, who has been heading the LIT till date. Mohinder Pal has been transferred to the MC.

Youth robbed
Ludhiana, February 22
Two robbers snatched a bag containing Rs 11,000 from an employee of Ganesh Floride Company at knife point in Rakh Bagh, considered a secure area. The employee, Pintu Singh, was robbed at 9.30 am when he was on way to the State Bank of India, Fountain Chowk, for depositing the cash.The robbers, on a motorcycle, fled before the youh could raise an alarm.

Brothers held for thefts

The local police has nabbed two brothers who had been booked under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC for allegedly stealing household goods and valuables from various houses and government veterinary hospital during last month. Goods worth Rs 2 lakh were recovered from their possession.

The centre of excellence scheme, for modernising the industrial training institutes in the state, launched by the Punjab government has received overwhelming response from rural youths. The technical education department has recruited over 500 instructors for training people in those trades that had earlier been closed.

A freshers’ ceremony was organised at the Institute of Nursing in Dr B.L. Kapur Memorial Hospital yesterday. Students of general nursing and midwifery (GNM) course were asked to serve humanity with dedication and compassion and to uphold the dignity of the profession of nursing. Dalbir Kapur, nephew of Dr B.L. Kapur, the founder of the institution, and Bhuvanesh Kumari, a Supreme Court lawyer, were the guests of honour. The Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology (LCET) under the aegis of the Optima Mathematics Club (OMC) organised a series of lectures on “Integral Transforms and its applications in Differential Equations” for engineering students at its campus. The aim of the activity was to elucidate the students with complex mathematical concepts. The resource person for the session was Dr Rajneesh Kumar, professor, department of mathematics, Kurukshetra University.

Leucoderma curable, says expert

SPS Apollo Hospital organsied a special leucoderma awareness and check-up camp in the department of dermatology here yesterday. A team of consultants, led by Dr Jastinder K. Gill, consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist, examined nearly 60 patients while also educating them about the causes and treatment of the skin disorder.
