Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was tonight banned for three Tests after ICC match referee Mike Procter upheld the Australian charge that he had racially abused their all-rounder Andrew Symonds, a decision against which the Indian team will appeal within 24 hours.

College principal murdered

In a horrifying incident, Rita Bawa, principal of one of the prominent women colleges Kanya Maha Vidhyala, was found murdered at her residence on the college campus in the wee hours today. The unknown assailants also did not spare her cook Kishore Mandal and two security guardsTarsem Lal and Shamsheedin.

Girl student shot dead in Santiniketan
Kolkata, January 6
Saswati Pal, a 20-year-old girl student of Visva Bharati University, was allegedly shot dead by an unidentified youth, who also tried to kill himself at the Ananda Sadan Hostel today, which caused panic and anger among the inmates and the residents of Santiniketan.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who will be visiting India later this month, is to marry his new girlfriend, the former model-turned-singer Carla Bruni, a French newspaper reported today, claiming a wedding was “imminent”.

New Delhi, January 6
At least seven persons were charred to death and 10 others received serious burns when a devastating fire swept through a slum near Sadar Bazaar railway station in the Lahori Gate area of central Delhi today. A Delhi fire services official said the blaze erupted at around 2.30 am. Hundreds of people were rendered homeless as over 3,750 jhuggis were gutted.
