Teaching management
Management plays a very significant role in all human activities. It is management which makes difference in the performance of any organisation. The importance of management in organisations has further increased during recent times because the scale of operations have gone high, labour has become specialised, markets became highly competitive and an efficient handling of things became need of the day. To successfully face competitive markets and move forward in the right direction require developing vision by understanding the situation and evolving a suitable model of management that can ensure optimum use of human and non-human resources.
Management is basically a supportive function which facilitates the achievement of common goals in a group activity. It concerns with creating an environment in which all the resources can be put to their optimum use. A manager's function is to plan, organise, direct and control the efforts of all concerned in a way that organisational objectives are achieved effectively and efficiently. To perform these functions s/he is supposed to possess certain basic managerial skills. Management as a discipline though does not have a very long history, but the subject has grown rich if considered from the point of view of conceptualisation of its philosophical base. Various management thinkers have given thoughts and suggested models over the time which form theoretical base of the subject. However, management being more situational always requires fresh ideas and way outs whenever there is any change in the situation. During recent years two very important things have happened having their far reaching effects on global business environment. These are globalisation of economies and information technology revolution. The present phase of world economy is described as the fast changing economy ever experienced earlier. Globalisation of economy has brought into its fold many things. The nature of economy has changed to a surplus position. It is now Darwin's theory of the survival of the fittest that applies to business ventures. The business focus has shifted to quality, cost, efficiency, consumer services, core competencies, knowledge and innovations for survival in competitive environment. IT revolution has quickened the process of change and integration of economies. IT could make in-roads to all areas of human activities and today no one can think of management without its use. Only IT savvy managers can perform in modern organisations. Some advanced IT concepts which have direct applications to business management are Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Data Mining and Decision Support System, Web Engineering, E-Commerce, Networking Technologies and a few more. Management education in the current context need to ensure adequate emphasis on the emerging areas of IT having business applications. Management being an applied area of studies requires matching theory to practice. Current phase of economic change being highly volatile and multi-dimensional require fresh look into the management education, its contents and pedagogy. Looking at the current business realities three additional management skills seems to have become highly relevant for managers to perform in modern organisations. These are IT skills, entrepreneurial skills and global outlook. Industry today needs smart, dynamic and creative personalities at managerial positions. The traditional list of managerial skills which included inter-personal skills, conceptual skills, technical skills, communication skills and decision making skills stands extended today. The complexion of management education, therefore, needs to be expanded accordingly. Another important aspect of higher education which so far could not get the desired attention of planners, particularly in technical education field, is its focus on extension services. The current mandate for higher education in the country is broadly for teaching and research only. Institutions engaged in higher education are carrying out their activities in pursuance of these two objectives. There are a few top ranking institutions which could move a step forward and expand their interactions with industry and profession to give proper practical orientation to education. Extension services are highly relevant to the field of technical education being applied nature of the subjects. Technical education institutions need to be managed on the pattern of agricultural universities model where teaching, research and extension wings function simultaneously and perhaps that could make their contributions possible in green revolution. A recent research study carried out by the author also supported the view that extension services in technical education would help promote quality and reduce gaps between theory and practice. For quality in management education, therefore, institutions need to adopt a balanced approach and pay adequate attention to teaching, research and extension activities in education process. The other peculiar characteristic of management as a discipline which distinguishes it from other applied sciences is its behavioural and cultural sensitivities. Management primarily means managing people, who in turn help manage various resources. It is the people's psychology, behaviour and their culture that need to be considered while applying any technique of management on them. The irony of the situation is that we are trying to manage our people by applying techniques and ideas that do not match to their aspirations. If there can be a Japanese management technique or American models of management, why can't there be an Indian style of management? The main reason for poor work culture in our organisations, particularly in the public sector, is due to the wrong style of management that perhaps do not match to the cultural background of our people. There is an immediate need to evolve an Indian style of management that integrates management theory to Indian culture and is motivating to people for higher level performances in organisations. Cultural aspect in human behaviour cannot be ignored while studying management. To sum up, it may be said that managing management education in new economy requires a visionary approach by understanding various dynamics of management practices in modern organisations. Industry today needs smart organisations and dynamic leadership to manage the same. It is the challenge that lies before management educators and the profession. |

The Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India has earmarked Rs. 518 crores for funding various Universities and Colleges of India for improvement of Science and Technology infrastructure. So far 265 Institutions including 112 Universities and 103 postgraduate colleges have been covered under DST- FIST Schemes. This was stated by Dr. S. Chandrasekaran of the Department of Organic Chemistry and Chairman, Division of Chemical Sciences, Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore while addressing a workshop on DST grants to colleges for Science Courses organized under the aegis of College Development Council of GNDU for the Principals of affiliated colleges.
Dr. S. Chandrasekaran highlighted the various funding schemes available under Department of Science and Technology. He insisted the Principals to encourage the college faculty to apply for funding as there was no dearth of budget. Dr. Jai Rup Singh: Vice-Chancellor while inaugurating the workshop expressed the hope that the College Principals would surely get benefit from the schemes.
NSS volunteer's responsibility
Professor, M.S. Gill of the Department of Sociology, spoke to NSS volunteers on "Role of Community in Rural Department". Dr. Singh was speaking during 10-days NSS special camp which was organised by the volunteers of the University. In his lecture, Dr. Gill said that NSS volunteers have great responsibilities towards different dimensions of the society. He said that if the youth of country would be aware of their duties, our nation would be developed at the international level. Dr. Gill informed the volunteers that with the time, new acts and intensive programs at Rural and District level had been launched. He said these new programs made this modern India and increase the economy growth of the country.
