Over 150 houses gutted in oldest surviving democracy of the world
Malana Barrage (Kullu), January 5
Over 150 houses and six temples and ‘bhandars’ (temple stores) of Jamlu Devta, the presiding deity of the famous Malana village, were destroyed in a fire that broke out around 7.45 am today. The village is known as the oldest surviving democracy of the world.

Apart from setting up six police stations to exclusively deal with complaints of NRIs, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today announced the constitution of a board of officers under the command of a DIG to gather information and examine cases of more than 1,300 NRI proclaimed offenders.

Last minute wisdom dawning upon Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda to stake state’s share in Chandigarh international airport may have altered the terms and conditions of the memorandum of understanding (MoU), but not without a price. Haryana will have to dole out Rs 200 crore for the project, location of which will remain in the territories of Chandigarh as well as Mohali.

Basu: We want capital; socialism not possible now

Veteran CPM leader Jyoti Basu today conceded that socialism and classless society were Utopian ideas. He admitted that though they were communists, they had accepted capitalism since they were living in the capitalistic system. “It is always wise to accept the situation and accordingly take necessary steps for quickly developing the country,” Basu suggested.
