Honour killing rocks state, again
Chandigarh, July 2 Manoj and Babli were done to death, allegedly by members of Babli's family because they had dared to go against the so-called social norms. They belonged to Karora village in Kaithal district. Their fault was that they belonged to the same "Gotra" and were in love with each other. The report of the Kaithal "honour" killing has come close on the heels of a similar incident in Rohtak district. Anita of Ajayab village and Sonu of Bharan village in Rohtak district were killed by a brother of Anita after the couple eloped. Anita and Sonu were lured to Ajayab village by her brother, Jai Bhagwan, when she called him up for helping her in getting some documents necessary for solemnising their marriage. On reaching the village, the couple was stabbed to death in full public view. The killer later himself informed the police about his crime and surrendered before it. There was not even an iota of protest by the villagers. What makes the death of Manoj and Babli more heinous and shocking is that they were under the protection of the court of law after they had married. Both were adult. They were kidnapped from a Haryana Roadways bus near Raipur village in Karnal district by Babli's family on June 15 last, though they were supposed to be escorted by a police party. Manoj's family tried to lodge an FIR with the Butana police station in Karnal district, but the police turned it away on the plea that since they belonged to Kaithal district, the case should be registered there. The Kaithal police told the family that since the incident had taken place in Karnal district, the report should be lodged there. The FIR could be lodged only after two days of the incident. The allegation was "kidnapping with the intention to murder". It is not known what action the Karnal police took to trace the couple. But their bodies were recovered from the Barwala branch canal near Sandala village, near Narnound town in Hisar district on June 23. The bodies were cremated as "unidentified". It is obvious the Haryana Police had again gone wrong. The police is supposed a to flash a message about missing or kidnapped persons to not only all police stations in the state but also to the police of other states. If this message was flashed across Haryana, why the Hisar police did not check with the Karnal police before cremating the bodies of Manoj and Babli as "unidentified". Well aware that the village community would not allow them to marry, the two had fled from the village on April 6. The girl's family lodged a case against Manoj at Rajound police station Manoj and Babli, in the meanwhile, solemnised their marriage on May 18 and sought the protection of the court, which directed the Kaithal police to provide them security. Later Manoj and Babli appeared in a court at Kaithal on June 15 and gave their statements before it following which the FIR registered against Manoj was cancelled. The couple after appearing in the court left for Pipli in Kurukshetra district. They were escorted by the police till Pipli. The police claims that at Pipli the couple told the escorting party to leave them alone as they were safe here and would go to an unspecified destination. But the relatives of Babli, who were ostensibly following them, kidnapped the couple after intercepting the bus on the national highway. The mother of Manoj after getting intimation reached the Kheri police post and on the basis of clothes reportedly confirmed that the bodies recovered and later cremated by police were those of Manoj and Babli . The police later registered a case under Section 302 and 201 of the IPC. |
Residents to intensify stir for land
deal approval
Hisar, July 2 Addressing a press conference here today the convener of the residents’ committee spearheading the campaign Narendra Sharma said the deal would come up before a meeting of the board of directors of the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board on July 9. Since several opposition parties, including the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), were putting pressure on the government to scrap the deal, the residents had decided to wear black badges on July 4 to counter the pressure. This would be followed by a day’s mass hunger strike by all residents of the area, including children. The next day the residents would submit a memorandum addressed to the Governor to the deputy commissioner in which they would demand that a school be built in the land. The residents would form a human chain around the 20-acre plot on July 7 to voice their protest against opposition of the deal by the political parties. The Jindals had bought the 20-acre plot in open auction for Rs 4.05 crore in May. However, the deal ran into rough weather when INLD leader Sampat Singh termed the deal as “the biggest land scam in Haryana” alleging the land worth Rs 500 crore was offered to the industrial conglomerate for a pittance. Originally the land was given by the government at reserve price to the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board for building a fodder, fish and vegetable markets. The board later declared 20 acres as surplus and proposed that the plot be auctioned for setting up a school. The Jindals bought the plot in open auction in which the only other bidders were societies run by the Jindal family. The SDM who chaired the auction had noted that the bid could have been much higher if other bidders had participated in the auction. |

Women’s varsity excels in MDU exams
Chandigarh, July 2 According to the result announced by MDU, 21 girl students of the B.P.S.M. College, Khanpur Kalan, have been placed in the merit list of B.Sc (home science) final-year examinations. The excellent result assumes significance in view of the fact that the university barely has any infrastructure and is located in a remote rural village of the state. The students do not have access to many educational resources. According to a spokesperson for the university, Hunny Chaudhry and Gunjan Chaudhry of this college have bagged the first and second positions in the university. Similarly, Kumari Anjali got fifth, Promila seventh and Neha Rana got eighth position in the university merit list whereas Sonia, Archna and Shalini of this college has also got 11th, 14th and 15th position, respectively. She said in the B.Sc final-year examinations, nine students of this college are in the university merit list. Interestingly, out of the first 15 positions in the university, eight are from the B.P.S Women University which became a university only a few months ago. The university has an IAS officer, Anuradha Gupta, as its vice-chancellor and an HCS officer, Sumedha Kataria, as its registrar. |
Tension over disputed masjid site
Ambala, July 2 Trouble had been brewing for the past couple of days with members of the Muslim community stating that a masjid on Nicholson Road had been wrongfully taken possession of by a local hotelier. This morning, a large number of members of the Muslim community reached the masjid, forcing open its shutters and clearing the windows which had been boarded up. They also put up a banner stating that there should be no encroachment on any religious site. Slogans were also raised against the local administration. A posse of police personnel stood guard on Nicholson Road to prevent any untoward incident from taking place. Later in the day, sub-divisional magistrate Mukesh Ahuja visited the spot and asked Jeetu to remove the shutters. Incidentally, Ambala Sadar municipal council officials had already sent a notice to the hotelier to remove the shutters.
