Kapurthala, March 1
Over 700 residents of Urban Estate here are deprived of basic amenities.

The Punjab Urban Development Authority (PUDA) has failed to provide any outlet drain for sewerage, proper entry road to the locality and rainwater disposal system.

President of the Urban Estate Welfare Society R.S. Dhillon said 717 residential plots had been allotted after a draw by PUDA in the first phase of allotment in 1999.

Subsequently, several other plots were allotted but PUDA could not provide any outlet drain for sewerage.

Presently, over 700 persons are living their on 100 plots allotted to them and the construction is on the other 100 plots.

In the absence of any sewerage outlet drain, the residents had to suffer a lot, said Dhillon, adding that they have left with no option but to arrange pumps to dispose off the sewerage water into open plots.

“Any water-borne disease may also spread due to disposing of sewerage water in the vacant plots in the absence of any other alternate arrangement,” he said.

Dhillon said PUDA had also not made any arrangement like water harvesting to dispose of rainwater due to which the water accumulated in different parts of the locality, creating problems for the residents.

“So much so, contrary to the plan of providing 120-ft-wide two lane road, PUDA could not provide any proper entry road to the locality. A number of trees on the proposed road are causing difficulty for the residents to reach their houses from GT road,” he added.

While PUDA Chief Administrator Manisha Trighatia was reportedly on leave, its Estate Officer Harbir Singh said the work for the outlet drain for sewerage was already going on and it would be completed soon.

To a query, he said rainwater harvesting system could not be installed in the locality as the plots had been allotted much earlier. “The problem of accumulation of rainwater would automatically be solved with the sewerage outlet drain,” he added.

Regarding the construction of entry road, the Estate Officer said the department had already written to the Forest Department to get permission to cut the trees. “As soon as the permission is provided, the road would be widened,” he added.
