Encroachers continue to rent out PUDA land

More than a year after the Punjab Urban Development and Planning Authority had issued notices of eviction to some residents of the Housing Board Colony on Ferozepore Road, who were accused of occupying a green belt and renting out the structures on it, no action has been taken and the encroachers continue to have a field day.

ZIPNET to track down stolen mobile phones

The city police has decided to adopt the Zonal Integrated Police Network (ZIPNET) service to track down lost or stolen mobile phone sets from the unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number.

A dismal year for industry

Hopes turned to despair for the local industry which got little in comparison to its expectations from the government in the wake of the forthcoming elections. The entire year witnessed demands, threats on most issues, only to be quietened on account of inaction. For retail, the segment that boomed this year, it was a transition phase for consumers who drew more towards brands and mall culture. Industrial woes like power shortage, delay in VAT refunds etc continued.

The MLA of Ludhiana (West) Assembly segment and Cabinet Minister, Mr Harnam Dass Johar, is under fire for allegedly using the state machinery and running a parallel public office at his house on Dugri Road.

This patient needs monetary help
Ludhiana, December 28
Santosh, a 28-year-old migrant labourer from Jharkhand, is admitted to the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here under the care of Dr Rajeev Kapoor. The patient, suffering from intestinal tuberculosis, was brought to the CMCH in a critical condition.

All set for New Year Eve blast

Days before the countdown began for the New Year Eve, residents of Ludhiana who like rocking parties, started making grand plans for the special day which ushers out the old year and rings in the new year. City hotels , restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs are gearing up to make the 'New Year Eve' an affair to remember This year, too, the city is going to rock on the New Year eve as people have grandiose plans.

Ex-servicemen hold meeting
Ludhiana, December 28
A quarterly meeting of ex-servicemen and widows was held at the Convey Ground. It was presided over by hony Capt Malkiat Singh,vice-president of the league. Ex-servicemen and widows, in a resolution passed at the meeting, expressed their gratitude to HQ 2 Corps under whose orders a mobile canteen has been visiting Khanna once a month.The canteen has proved to be a boon for the old ex-servicemen and their families as it saves them from the rigours of travelling to Doraha or Ludhiana.

Councillor seeks action against banks
Ludhiana, December 28
A local councillor, Mr Sanjeev Talwar, today alleged that some banks in the city were harassing some elderly residents, who were sanctioned pensions by the state government, by not opening their accounts in the banks.

Faculty development programme begins today
Mandi Gobindgarh, December 28
A two-day faculty development programme is being organised at the RIMT-Institute of Management and Computer Technology from tomorrow. Giving this information, the director of the institute, Dr B.S. Bhatia, said the purpose of the programme was to give a thrust to research activities among members of the faculty.

Vibhuti Jain of the 19th Punjab Bn, NCC, who has been selected for the award of Director-General NCC Commendation Card, was presented the medal and certificate at a function at the Air Force auditorium held at Chandigarh recently.

Busy time for NSS, NCC volunteers

It is busy time for NSS and NCC volunteers as a number of colleges in the district have organised special training camps for them during the winter break. Hundreds of cadets are being trained in the camps daily, some of the camps are even organised at near-by villages.

NSS volunteers rally against social evils
Mandi Ahmedgarh, December 28
Socially useful project works were undertaken by volunteers of the NSS unit of Shanti Tara during initial days of the 10-day camp organised on the college campus. Besides marching through streets of surrounding villages to spread awareness about social evils, including drug addiction, female foeticide and the dowry system, the volunteers benefited from a seminar on traffic rules.

A 10-day NSS camp was organised by RIMT College of Education. A literacy campaign and cleanliness drive by the volunteers were the highlights of the camp. An educational trip to Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala, was also organised.

Seminar on Vivekananda’s teachings

The Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology (LCET), Katani Kalan, in association with the Swami Vivekananda Study Circle organised a seminar on the Principles of Swami Vivekananda and its practicability on today's world. The resource-persons, Prof Viney Sathi and Dr Sanjiv Dawar, highlighted the ideology of Swamiji in detail.

Ludhiana December 28
Students of Cyberstar Infotech, PTU Learning Centre, Sunder Nagar, organised a New Year-cum-Freshers’ Party here yesterday. The students celebrated the function gloriously and the enthusiasm.

Waris Rashid, winner of many awards in football, prefers to learn finer points of the game from his parents than to accept a sponsorship from the organisers of the recently concluded 52nd National School U-14 Football Championship at Port Blair, where he was declared the “youngest promising player of the tournament.”
