Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, December 25
Representatives of an NGO, Helpline, has demanded the arrest of three financiers and one of their associates, who are facing nine FIRs for allegedly harassing different persons.

Talking to mediapersons, NGO state president Dr Ravi Verma and district chief Ashok Sharma said FIRs had been registered against Gian Singh of Lajpat Nagar, his two sons - Ramjit Walia and Jagjit Singh Walia - and their associate Gurdeep Singh under several Sections, including 420 (cheating), IPC, at different police stations in August and September.

However, none of the accused had been arrested to date, in spite of the registration of the cases.

Dr Verma and Mr Sharma said the accused had cheated the complainants in the name of recovering money lent to them.

The complainants were forced to issue blank cheques to the accused against loans. Later, the accused realised these cheques from banks after filling huge amounts.

The representatives of the NGO said the matter was brought to the notice of the then SSP Ishwar Singh, at whose initiation the cases were registered.

The NGO also presented some victims, including Mukesh Sharma and Sidhu Bala, before the mediapersons and they later narrated their tales.

Helpline chairman Kulwant Rai and its anti-corruption cell chief Pankaj Sarpal were also present.

Jalandhar, December 25
“Sanklap Divas”, organised by the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) to celebrate the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, turned into a virtual election rally here today.

Almost none of the speakers abstained from urging the gathering to vote out the Amarinder Singh-led Congress government from the state and bring back Parkash Singh Badal-led SAD-BJP government during the forthcoming elections.

Former minister Manoranjan Kalia claimed that Badal-led SAD-BJP alliance would regain power in the elections, which are slated to be held in February.

He claimed that people were fed up with “anti-people policies” of the Congress government in the state.

Claiming a repeat of voting into power of SAD-BJP in the state in 1997, followed by Vajpayee-led NDA government at the Centre in 1998, this time, he said they would stage a comeback both in the state and at the Centre.

He, however, did not forget to count Mr Vajpayee’s achievements during his tenure as Prime Minister.

Terming Mr Vajpayee as the greatest leader of the country among the contemporary politicians, he said Mr Vajpayee was instrumental in giving the country the nuclear state status.

Also, Mr Vajpayee government had kept a tab on the prices of essential commodities.

BJYM’s national executive member R.P. Singh, state BJP secretary Vinod Sharma, state BJYM president Ashwani Sharma, district BJP president Shiv Dayal Chugh, former MLA Bhagat Chunni Lal, former district BJP chief Nawal Kamboj, and district BJYM president Amarjit Singh Amri also spoke.
