Obviously concerned at their party's dipping popularity among the minorities, both Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today took up cudgels for the minority community and asked the security agencies and state authorities to desist from branding all Muslims as terrorists as this would lead to their alienation.

Sonia takes up cudgels for farmers
Nainital, September 23
Besides taking up the case of minorities, Congress president Sonia Gandhi also sought to refurbish her party's "pro-farmer" image today as she expressed serious concern about the government's policy on Special Economic Zones (SEZ), which has become a highly contentious issue among farmers whose lands have been acquired for these projects.

TRS withdraws support to UPA government
New Delhi, September 23
Having been pushed to the wall, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), having three members in the Lok Sabha, expectedly withdrew its support to the Congress-led UPA government today without causing any tremors to the stability of the coalition arrangement at the Centre.

IHRO: cops used excessive force
Girl students were primary victims

Ludhiana, September 23
The International Human Rights Organisation (IHRO), while condemning Punjab Chief Minister's for giving a clean chit to the Ludhiana police's onslaught on the agitating Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) students, accused the police force for using excessive force and censured the Veterinary University V-C, Mr D S Bains, for his inability to place the students' cause before the government. Petro prices likely to go down
Mumbai, September 23
Prices of petrol and diesel may fall in the coming weeks if international prices of crude oil continue to fall, Union Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said here today. Speaking to mediapersons at a function, Deora said the government expected petroleum prices to continue falling.

Bomb threat on Rajdhani
Ahmedabad, September 23
Bomb disposal squads and the police have rushed to the Kalupur railway station, near here, following an anonymous call saying a bomb was planted in the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express this evening. The train which was scheduled to leave from the station at 5.30 p.m has been delayed by an hour. — PTI

28 convicted in fodder scam case

A special court here today sentenced 28 persons, including four women, to rigorous imprisonment for terms ranging between two and six years in a fodder scam case, taking the total number of persons convicted in connection with the multi-crore crime to 151. —PTI
