Cops add insult to injury, book 200 students

Ludhiana, September 22
As if the brute force that the police used mercilessly against veterinary students on the Punjab Agricultural University campus yesterday was not enough, it has now registered an FIR against them.

Interestingly, the FIR has been lodged in the Sarabha Nagar police station on a complaint of Mr Sandeep Kumar Vadera, SHO, Sadar police station, the main person behind resorting to unprovoked lathicharge on students on the campus.

The FIR has been registered under Sections 353, 186, 187, 341, 506 and 149 of the IPC against nearly 200 students, including girls. No arrests have been made so far. Surprisingly, the police has accused the students of preventing it from performing its duty, issuing threats and “illegally confining cops on the campus”.

The registration of the FIR against the students has led to widespread resentment among students, their parents and the public. They said it amounted to adding insult to injury. Students ridiculed the police claims that it was prevented from performing its duty and was threatened.

One of the victims of yesterday’s police brutality, who has been named in the FIR, asked, “How could 20-odd girls illegally confine over 100 cops wielding lathis?” She said the FIR should have been registered against the cops who misbehaved with them in full public view.

“The whole country has seen what they did yesterday in a shameful manner and now they are trying to cover it up and build pressure on us,” said another student, adding that they would approach the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Women to seek action against the guilty cops.

The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr A.S. Rai, while confirming the registration of the FIR, said the whole incident would be thoroughly investigated. He said no particular officer had been assigned the inquiry as the FIR itself would take note of all aspects, including police excesses and misbehaviour with the students.

However, not many people agreed with the police version. They pointed out that “the accused have turned complainants and victims have been made the accused”, adding that “what sort of justice can anyone expect now?”
