New Delhi, September 19
The institute body of the PGI, the apex decision-making body, today approved the appointment of Dr Vinay Sakhuja, Head of the Department of Nephrology, as Dean of the PGI and Dr Amod Gupta, Head of the Department of Opthalmology as Sub Dean.

The post of Dean had been lying vacant since Dr Sudha Suri retired on February 28 this year.

After day long deliberations chaired by Health Minister Anbhumani Ramadoss at Nirman Bhavan, headquarters of the Health Ministry, the governing body of the PGI okayed the promotion of 16 Associate Professors as Additional Professors.

Sources in the PGI said these promotions were time-bound and were made by a Standing Selection Committee. Since they are called merit-cum-assessment promotions, the assessment of the Selection Committee is placed before the governing body and then approved by the institute body.

PGI Director, Professor K.K. Talwar told TNS here on Tuesday evening that Dr Sakhuja, the seniormost Professor has been appointed Dean.

Asked whether any decision had been about Professor R.S. Dhaliwal, the cardiac surgeon who is facing a CBI inquiry for allegedly using defective valves, Professor Talwar said,

“The Health Ministry has sought the file on Professor Dhaliwal and will scrutinise the case. It is a very sensitive issue.’’

The PGI Director further said that the institute body had also approved in principle the constitution of the Institute of Paramedical Sciences.

At the same time, it has given a nod for amendment in the PGI Act, 1967. Once the Act is amended, PGI will not need a go ahead from the Dental Council of India for introducing programmes.
