Tehran, September 1
An Iranian airliner caught fire on landing in the northeastern city of Mashhad today, killing at least 80 passengers, state television reported.
The Russian-made Tupolev, which was on an internal flight from the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, suffered a tyre burst on landing and swerved off the runway before hitting nearby barriers and bursting into flames, the television said.
There were 148 passengers on board, the television said, adding that some survivors had escaped with injuries.
