Cheque bounce: man told to pay Rs 50,000
Ludhiana August 11
Convicting a businessman in a cheque bounce case, a local court directed the accused to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation to the aggrived complainant, who suffered huge losses. The accused was sentenced to undergo imprisonment for six months.A fine of Rs 4000 was also imposed upon the accused.

Ex-MLA accuses ADC of contempt of court

Former Minister and Kila Raipur MLA Jagdish Singh Garcha today accused the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), Mr Priyank Bharti, of committing contempt of court by not stopping development works in some areas of the Assembly segment, despite these having been stopped by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Chaos continues to rule Division No. 3 chowk, the most congested point in the old city, owing to nonfunctional traffic lights, installed at an exorbitant cost over 10 years ago. The junction, where six major roads converge, presents an ugly picture of traffic anarchy at peak hours, putting hundreds of motorists to inconvenience.

Quiz on freedom fighters

An inter house quiz, ‘Jung-Ay-Azadi’ was conducted at BCM School, Dugri, here today to commemmorate the sacrifices of those courageous freedom fighters. The four teams that participated were Azadi Ka Parwane, Azad-e-Hind, Shaheed-e-Azam and Elan-e-Jung stepped into the arena with collages prepared by them on the theme. Each team was also given a minute for presentation.

Booked for backing out of land deal

The City police has booked Tehal Singh, son of Karnail Singh of Mahon village of this tehsil under Sections 406 and 420 on the complaint of Pawan Kumar, a resident of Ludhiana, for backing out of a deal over a piece of land after receiving payment thereof.

LMA holds seminar on service tax

The Ludhiana Management Association (LMA) organised a talk on “Service tax: burning issues concerning trade & industry” here last evening. A new mechanism for grievance redressal had been put in place, “which would substantially reduce litigation and foster relationship of partnership”, said Mr V.K. Garg, Commissioner, Central Excise and Taxation, who was the keynote speaker.

Guru Nanak college excels in BCom II

Ludhiana, August 11
The students of B.Com.-II of Guru Nanak Girls College here performed exceptionally well in the examinations conducted by Panjab University. Baljeet Kaur stood first securing 72.7 per cent marks. The second and third positions were bagged by Neha Gupta and Kirandeep Kaur, who secured 71.74 per cent and 71.57 per cent marks, respectively. The maximum number of students were placed in the first division. The college Principal, Dr Charanjit Mahal, congratulated the staff and the students over the results.

200 take part in painting contest
Ludhiana, August 11
The Bharat Vikas Parishad (Shivaji) organised a painting competition at Shishu Model School today. More than 200 students from class I to X painted pictures on traffic control, pollution and drug addiction. Manager Narinder Bangia and Principal Neelam Bangia welcomed the office-bearers of the Bharat Vikas Parishad.

Over 400 persons were examined for eye and other diseases and medicines were given free of cost at a medical camp held at Randev Fillers, an Indian Oil Corporation petrol pump, at Basti Jodhewal here yesterday.
