Four persons lost their lives and seven others were injured in the recent floods that affected a population of 21,600 in 25 villages spread over seven blocks of Kargil district of Ladakh region. These included two badly affected and five partially affected blocks in which 120 zamindari kohls or irrigation canals, 30 foot bridges and 10 water
reservoir tanks have been damaged.
This information was given to the Chief Minister, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, on his visit to Kargil today where he handed over a cheque for Rs 50 lakh to the district administration for immediate relief to the flood-affected. He reviewed the situation that has arisen due to floods and rains, two days after he had an aerial visit of the flood and rain affected districts of Leh and Kargil on Tuesday.
The affected villages in Kargil district included eight in Sankoo block, five in Chiktan, four each in Kargil and Shergoli, one each in Taisuru and Drass and two in Zanskar block.
The meeting to review the situation due to rains and floods was told that six houses were fully damaged, 42 partially and household belongings of 48 families were damaged. Similarly six mosques and imambadas and 12 commercial buildings were damaged. Standing crops over 300 hectares were damaged and 1200 trees got uprooted and were washed away. Five private light vehicles and machinery was also damaged. As many as 30 cows and zomos and 300 sheep and goats also perished.
Damage to government property included one DG set, 20 km of transmission line, 43 water supply schemes, 15 government buildings, 13 canals and 70 km road length.
The Chief Minister announced free ration to residents of the villages where crops have been completely destroyed due to floods. He asked the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department and district administration to ensure heavy stocking of all essential commodities in the district. The Chief minister announced that those whose houses had been completely damaged would be given Rs 10,000 each by the government and in addition he also sanctioned Rs 10,000 each from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Similarly those whose houses had been partially damaged would get Rs 2000 each from the government and additional Rs 2000 each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He also directed the administration to clear the roads immediately.
