Changes in VAT return form cause confusion
Ludhiana, July 19

Changes in Value Added Tax (VAT) return form by the Excise and Taxation department have created confusion among industrialists. This was stated by Mr Jatinder Khurana, president of the Taxation Young Lawyers Association.

More UK MPs back World War soldiers
Ludhiana, July 19
Indian soldiers who fought in World War II have reason to become more optimistic for rectifying a decision taken against them by the British government. A notice of motion moved by 19 Members of Parliament in May seeking compensation for the soldiers, especially the prisoners of war (PoWs), has garnered more support with another 38 MPs signing the petition prepared by Ludhiana-based Col Chanan Singh Dhillon (retd).

Campaign on UPA govt achievements
Ludhiana, July 19
Mr. S .S Pantode, Joint Director media and communication, Ministry of Information, Government of India, today said that a five-day public information campaign was being organised at Jifco Resorts, G T Road, Sahnewal, in Ludhiana District from July 24 to 28 to educate people regarding the various welfare and development programmes of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in the country.

Now electroplaters allege harassment
Ludhiana, July 19
After the dyeing industry, it is electroplaters who have alleged high-handedness by the Punjab Pollution Control Board. In a memorandum to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, the Ludhiana Electroplaters Association said the chairman of PPCB has sent 156 notices to industrial units but did not give them any chance for personal hearing.

Amarnath langar operators face problems

Various organisations providing langar facilities to the Amarnath pilgrims are facing problems. This is partly due to the apathy of the local administration and partly due to the inexperience of officials dealing with them. With the result, the pilgrims, who could otherwise get food and shelter free of cost, are made to pay many times than the routine expenses.

DC launches plantation drive

Mr Ashok Kumar Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, has exhorted the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to come forward for the plantation of saplings in the city during this season. Mr Gupta was addressing a function in the Central Jail after inaugurating Vanmahotsava jointly organised by the jail authorities and the Rotary Club Ludhiana North today.

Police looks for clues at jeweller’s shop
Ludhiana, July 19
A team of the city police today searched the New Punjab Jewellers’ shop situated in the Dhodha Complex, Rani Jhansi Road. The police was looking for clues of some persons known to the murdered jeweller couple, Darshan Singh and Paramjit Kaur. The couple had owned the shop.

18 hurt in bus-truck collision
Ludhiana, July 19
As many as 18 persons were injured, two of them seriously, in a head-on collision between a bus and a mini truck. The accident occurred near Baddowal, when the ill-fated Ludhiana-bound bus of Punjab Roadwayscollided head on with a mini truck coming from the Ludhiana side around 7.50 am today.

BKU (Ekta) holds dharna
Jagraon, July 19
Hundreds of member of different farmer unions hold dharna and offer themselves for arrest to accelerate ‘Zameen Bachao Kisan Jagao’ movement in front of the office of the local SDM here today. They demanded return of 376 acres of land to the farmers which was being allotted by state government to Trident Group in Barnala tehsil.

Jagraon, July 19
Rajinder Singh, a resident of Kila Raipur village, has been booked under Sections 363, 366, 376 of the IPC by the Dakha police. It is reported that Rajinder Singh allegedly kidnapped a girl of Chachrari village and took her to Rajasthan where he raped her.

Reacting strongly to the government decision to hand over six more departments to the panchayats, the Punjab Subordinate Services federation (PSSF) has demanded immediate review of the policies of privatisation and initiation of steps for implementation of all pending demands of the employees.

Pvt aided school teachers suffer as pay not paid

Peeved over the alleged indifferent attitude of leaders of the area towards non-payment of salaries for many months, office-bearers of the district unit of the Private Aided School Teachers Association has threatened to launch an agitation if the payment was not made immediately.

Little ones vie in star hunt contest
Ludhiana, July 19
Throughout India 40,000 children are participating in the talent hunt contest called Rin Advanced White Star Hunt. The hunt started a few days ago and students aged 4 to 14 years are participating in it. In the city, around 100 students got a chance to showcase their talent today in DAV Public School.

Prayers mark new session in colleges
Ludhiana, July 19
Enthusiasm, fun and confusion prevailed among students with the new academic session of colleges beginning in the city. Hundreds of newcomers were seen dressed in their best on the first day in the college. Many enthusiastic youngsters looked forward to making new friends whereas some others, who could not find their classes, teachers or new friends were a confused lot.

Clinic plus ayurveda started its first phase of tulsi and neem plantation here yesterday. More than 700 students of various schools were given tulsi plants by company officials and were told about the good qualities of tulsi and neem.

Surgery saves eyesight of woman 
Ludhiana, July 19
A 30-year-old migrant woman, Isher Wati, might have lost her right eye besides sustaining damage to her brain but for timely treatment and innovative surgery performed by a team of Dr Harminder Singh, an eye surgeon, and Dr Parvinderjit Singh, an ENT surgeon, at Shri Krishna Hospital here. Giving details to Ludhiana Tribune here today, Dr Harminder Singh said the woman had suffered an injury over the forehead with a block of wood nearly two months ago. She received treatment for the wound, unmindful of the fact that a big piece of wood had tore through one of the eye muscles and lodged itself behind the eyeball.

Health Dept drive to ensure cleanliness
Ludhiana, July 19
Under the ongoing drive against food adulteration, teams of health officials comprising district health officer Dr I.D. Goyal, food inspectors Mr Manoj Khosla and Mr Ravinder Garg, conducted raids at several places and took around one dozen samples of eatables and soft drinks from different places in the city which were sent to government laboratory for analysis.
