One killed, 10 hurt in blast 

Srinagar, July 15
One person was killed and 10 others injured at Ganderbal on the Srinagar-Baltal road, the base camp of the Amarnath route this afternoon.

Militants hurled a hand grenade towards the Central Reserve Police Force picket at Beehama Chowk in Ganderbal, about 25 km from here.

The grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the roadside, causing injury to 11 persons.

The injured, all locals, were admitted to hospital, where the condition of two of them was stated to be critical.

One of the injured, Ghulam Ahmad Khan, later succumbed to injuries.

Security forces in the nearby picket also fired several rounds, in which one person was injured, who was admitted to a hospital.

Meanwhile, troops gunned down a foreign militant in an encounter at Kulgam in Anantnag district today.

The encounter ensued after a search party was attacked by militants in the wee hours today.

A foreign militant, Abdullah Bhai, was killed.

One AK rifle and arms and ammunition were seized from the slain militant.

A militant of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba was also gunned down by the police in an encounter at Kidroo Nullah in the Doda district early today.

On specific information, an ambush was laid by a police party in the Kidroo area.

Militants were noticed, who were challenged to lay down arms and surrender, but instead, opened fire. During the ensuing encounter, one militant, identified as Abu Sofian, was killed.

One pistol, along with one magazine and two rounds, were recovered.

Meanwhile the police today detained for questioning an officer of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after a girl was found in his vehicle.

CRPF Deputy Commandant Vikram Singh, posted in south Kashmir, was detained by the police after a girl, a resident of Badgam district, was recovered from his vehicle near the Iqbal park here this afternoon.

He was being questioned and senior CRPF officers rushed to the police station at Shergrahi. Another report said he was arrested on the charge of kidnapping.

No senior CRPF official was available to comment on the incident. — UNI

CRPF official detained with girl

Srinagar, July 15
An Assistant Commandant of the CRPF was today detained by the police here along with a girl, officials said.

The official of 143 battalion, posted in Anantnag, was detained this morning along with the girl, hailing from the Chadoora area of Badgam district, Station House Officer of the police station M. Rashiq said.

He said the officer and the girl were later handed over to the Bagam police.

It was not clear why they were detained and what are the charges against them. — PTI

Mother, son killed in flash floods

Jammu, July 15
A mother-son duo was killed in flash floods while crossing a river in Poonch district, official sources said.

Sakina Begum and her son Maqsood, who were crossing the Poonch river, were suddenly caught in flash floods and washed away yesterday, they said.

The police and family members launched a search for them and finally recovered their bodies last evening, they said, adding that the bodies had been sent for post-mortem. — PTI
