Narayanan meets Chinese counterpart
Anil K. Joseph

Beijing, June 25
India’s Special Representative to the India-China boundary talks K. Narayanan and his Chinese counterpart Dai Bingguo have met informally in the north-western Chinese city of Xian ahead of the official-level talks here tomorrow.

Narayanan, National Security Adviser, who arrived in Xi'an, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi province yesterday, met with Dai, Executive Vice-Foreign Minister. It is understood that they met informally and also went sightseeing the famous Terracotta Warriors, known as the eighth wonder of the world.

The official-level eighth round of boundary talks is scheduled from June 26 to 27 and the two sides are expected to continue their in-camera sessions in an effort to resolve the boundary issue under the “political parameters” set during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to New Delhi in April 2005.

The new round of negotiations would be taking place after the recent successful visit to China by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee as well as last week’s historic agreement between India and China to reopen the Nathu La border trade point situated at 4,400 metres.

The Himalayan pass, which was a part of the famed Silk Road, was closed after the 1962 war.

After the last round in New Delhi and Kumarakom, Kerala, in March, a brief statement said: “The two Special Representatives continued their discussions for an agreed framework for the resolution of the boundary question in a constructive and friendly atmosphere.” — PTI
