Two bus fire victims die; sabotage ruled out

Two women passengers who were seriously injured in the fire onboard a Punjab Roadways bus here yesterday died in Ludhiana today.

Bhagwanti Devi (50), a resident of the local Santokhpura mohalla, and Sukhwinder Rani, 40, a resident of Taggran village in Hoshiarpur district, succumbed to their burn injuries at the CMC hospital of Ludhiana early this morning and in the afternoon, respectively. While Bhagwanti Devi was accompanied by her grand-daughter Preeti, Sukhwinder Rani, was travelling with her husband Ram Pal, an Assistant Sub-Inspector with the Punjab Police. Both Preeti and Ram Pal had also sustained burn injuries in the incident.

Bhagwanti Devi and Sukhwinder Rani were among the nine passengers who were shifted from the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, to Ludhiana due to their critical state. Both had received about 60-65 percent burns. As soon as the news about her death reached here, a pall of gloom descended on the Santokhpura residence of Bhagwanti Devi and in Taggran village of Hoshiarpur, from where Sukhwinder Rani hailed.

Meanwhile, investigations, conducted by a team of the Central Forensic Laboratory, Chandigarh, confirmed that there was no blast.
