Girl students got the books under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). Only girl students (and all students of the reserved categories) are entitled to get books under the SSA and the same have been distributed to them in the Jagadhri block schools.

On the other hand, boys have to buy books either from the schools or market. But the textbooks are neither available in the schools nor in the market.

Mr Roshan Lal of Roshan Book Depot said books were not available at government book stores and students were not interested in purchasing books from the old stock as they hoped to get the same from their schools.

The books were to be supplied under the SSA in all six education blocks of the district, but till date the books have been supplied only in the Jagadhri block. Even in Jagadhri all syllabus books have not been provided.

Even under the SSA the mathematics books of classes VI, VII and VIII have not been provided to the girl students. Similarly, girl students of class VI are still waiting for English, general science and social science books.

Sources said class VII girl students are yet to get English textbooks.

In the Jagadhri block, 3,500 books of class VI, 3,200 of class VII and 4,000 of class VIII are to be provided under the SSA. Out of the total 48 titles, the girl students have got only 28 titles.

The sources said the orders for the books had been placed but the delivery of the lot was yet to take place.

Mr Pradeep Sarin, district president of the Haryana Adhyapak Sangh, demanded that books should be immediately provided to the students.
