Online placement
: An online placement test was held at Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Derabassi, by National Technology Foundation Hyderabad, on Thursday. The test was conducted under the supervision of Lt-Col N.S. Julka (Retd), training and placement officer of the institute.

Jalandhar
Effigies burnt
: The residents of the Bhargo camp area on Friday protested against the Municipal Corporation’s demolition drive by burning effigies of the Mayor, Mr Surinder Mahey, and the state Transport Minister, Mr Mahinder Singh Kaypee. The residents rued the fact that the authorities had sanctioned crores of rupees for the development of the area, yet the affected were only being given Rs 2,000 each as compensation. The protest was supported by local BJP leaders.

Gang busted
: The local police on Friday claimed to have busted a gang of thieves comprising six members and having recovered from them scrap materials stolen from a local sugar mill on April 17. The goods were recovered from a truck that was intercepted at a naka on the Banga Road on Thursday night.

Pirated CDs seized: A video parlour selling pirated CDs in the Khilwara Gate locality was raided by the police on Friday. The shop owner, Rajesh Kumar, was arrested and 275 pirated CDs were recovered from the parlour. A case under the Copyright Act has been registered.

CHANDIGARH

School awarded: Ryan International School, Sector 49, has been recently awarded the status of an international centre by University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The school will now offer a range of internationally-accepted qualifications, including Cambridge's IGCSEs, and University of Cambridge international examinations.

Exhibition: The Eco-Club of Shishu Niketan Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, today organised an exhibition on the `Heritage of India'. Dr N.K. Ojha, Head of Department of Ancient History, Culture and Archeology, Panjab University, inaugurated the exhibition. A number of projects were displayed by the students of class X depicting Indian art and architecture.

Bank Manager: Mr R.N. Swami, Deputy General Manager, Central Bank of India, on Thursday took over as Zonal Manager of the bank’s Chandigarh Zone.

Money donated: The Punjab Bank Employees Federation today donated Rs 25,000 to the Aruna Asif Ali Memorial Trust for the underprivileged students of the school being run by the Trust. Mr N K Gaur, secretary, of All-India Bank Employees Association, donated the money.

ELECTED: Mr Sudhir Jain has been elected president of the Mahavir Jain Yuvak Mandal. The other office-bearers are vice-president — Mr Deepak Jain; general secretary — Mr Neeraj Jain; and cashier — Mr Sanjeev Jain.

Earth Day celebrated
: Students of Euro Kids school joined in the celebration of Earth Day here on Friday. Students between the age of two to five years were made aware of preserving their environment. They planted medicinal trees, herbs and shrubs with the help of Rajesh Sharma, Director of Euro Kids.
