Bangladesh have Aussies on the ropes
Fatullah, April 10 It was an amazing performance by Bangladesh against the top-ranked and in-form Australians though they did spring a shock on them last year, beating the world champions by five-wickets in a one-day match in Cardiff, Wales. It could have been worse today for Australia who at one stage slumped to 93-6 but Gilchrist, helped by Brett Lee (13 not out), managed to put on an unbeaten 52 together. Spinner Enamul Haque jr was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers, capturing two for 18 off nine overs. Earlier, Australian leg spinner Stuart MacGill produced career-best figures of eight for 108 to help polish off the Bangladesh innings after they had reached lunch on 413-6. However, the home side will have been more than delighted with their second-highest total in a test innings, inspired by a maiden test century from Shahriar Nafees (138) and valuable knocks from skipper Habibul Bashar (76) and Rajin Saleh (67) Australia’s Shane Warne did not take to the field today, the leg spinner complained of a sore shoulder the previous day after bowling 20 overs for 112 runs and no wickets. The second of the two-match series starts in Chittagong on Sunday. Australia are fresh from a 3-0 series win over South Africa, but Bangladesh have won only one of their previous 42 tests since earning Test status in 2000. That victory was against a depleted Zimbabwe and they have suffered 37 losses and gained just four draws. Bangladesh suffered innings defeats in their only two previous Tests they have played against Australia in 2003, the first of which lasted only two-and-a-half days. Australia head Test, ODI rankings
New Delhi, April 10 ICC director Mohammad Ali Asghar presented the cheque to Australian captain Ricky Pointing. A record nine wins, three draws and two defeats in Test cricket leaves Australia 18 points clear of nearest rivals England. In ODI cricket, the gap between Australia and second-placed South Africa is 13 points after Australia’s record of 20 wins, one tie and 10 defeats. Australia collected the reward ahead of the first day’s play in Dhaka after retaining a comfortable advantage in both official tables over the course of the past 12-month period. This is the second consecutive year in which Australia have benefited from their dominance of both the Test and ODI tables on the April 1 cut-off date. ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed congratulated Cricket Australia for their incomparable achievement. “The LG ICC Rankings have proved to be an excellent way of measuring the relative achievements of teams in both Test and ODI cricket and for the second year in a row, Australia have come out on top,” Speed added. Elaborating further, Speed said, “There was a lot of focus on their Ashes defeat earlier in the year but it is interesting to note that the only two Test matches they lost in 12 months of cricket were by two runs and three wickets. They should be congratulated for once again proving to be the most consistent team in both forms of the game”. Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland paid tribute to the performance of the Australian team and the administrative bodies that support the players. Australia’s dominance of both Test and ODI cricket is marginally less convincing than it was 12 months ago — their Test ranking is one point lower than in 2005 and their ODI ranking has dropped eight points over the year — but they still retain a comfortable cushion in both LG ICC tables. The fourth to 10th positions in Test ranking are taken by Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh while Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Kenya occupy the lower order in ODI rankings. |

BCCI suspends Dalmiya
Chennai, April 10 The decision to suspend Dalmiya for “anti-board activities” came barely a day after BCCI’s Working Committee meeting which had authorised its President Sharad Pawar to take a final decision on the matter. “Dalmiya has been suspended from attending all meetings including the Annual General Body meeting,” a highly placed BCCI source said. The suspension would remain in force till BCCI’s Disciplinary Committee comprising, Shashank Manohar and Chirayu Amin, takes a final decision on the veteran administrator who was regarded as the kingmaker in Indian cricket not too long ago. Dalmiya’s current plight is a result of a sustained campaign ever since the new regime headed by Pawar took over late last year after beating Dalmiya-backed nominee Ranbir Singh Mahendra. The board’s Marketing Committee, which has a known Dalmiya baiter Lalit Modi as a key member, accused the Cricket Association of Bengal president of siphoning off funds to the tune of Rs 21.74 lakh from the 1996 World Cup account. The board subsequently filed an FIR with Mumbai Police and the matter is now in Mumbai High Court. Dalmiya, 3 others get bail
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court today granted anticipatory bail to former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya and three other former cricket board office bearers in a case of alleged misappropriation of Rs 21.74 lakh filed by the BCCI. Justice V.M. Kanade granted bail to Dalmiya and other accused on a personal bond of Rs 25,000 each. Besides Dalmiya, others who got bail are former BCCI Secretary S.K. Nair and former treasurers Kishore Rungta and Jyoti Bajpai. BCCI filed a case in Marine Drive police station alleging that Dalmiya and the other former BCCI office bearers had misappropriated Rs 21.74 lakh from World Cup account in Indian Overseas Bank in Kolkata branch. Fearing arrest, Dalmiya and three others urged for anticipatory bail, saying they were ready to abide by the conditions imposed by the court for bail and would cooperate with the probe. In keeping with the High Court order, Dalmiya and other accused appeared before Economic Offences Wing of Mumbai Police on March 27, 28, 29 |
Guwahati under ICC scanner
London, April 10 An ICC spokesman said Chief Executive Malcolm Speed was aware of what happened in the northeastern city and would take a decision based on the report of Roshan Mahanama, the match referee. The Assam Cricket Association could also run into trouble as its secretary had yesterday blamed the umpires for calling off the match. The ICC spokesman, however, said the BCCI was not entirely at fault for scheduling the match at a venue which only sees international cricket every three or four years. “India came up with an itinerary and England agreed to play a match in Guwahati. If a board proposes a venue it’s up to the visiting country’s board to accept it or not,” he said. “If the England and Wales Cricket Board had had any doubts about it they could have sent a security delegation to inspect the ground,” he was quoted as saying by BBC Sport. Meanwhile, England batsman Andrew Strauss said he could understand the frustration of the crowd. “You can understand because they had been there for a long time and it wasn’t raining,” Strauss said. “From the outside it looked like the conditions were right for cricket. It’s a real shame for the spectators but obviously the players have got to take their own safety into account,” he said. “The bowlers’ run ups were very wet with the potential for bowlers to do themselves damage. It only takes one slip and you can damage yourself pretty badly. It just wasn’t fit enough to play a one-day international.” Strauss, who was all set to lead England in that ill-fated match, said it would have been a fantastic honour if it had gone ahead. “The opportunity to captain your country is one that would make anyone proud, but apart from a couple of chats to the umpires I didn’t actually do much,” he said.

Judoka’s murder: accused surrender
Hisar, April 10 The court sent them in judicial custody till April 12. According to police sources, their police remand would be sought thereafter. Earlier, the police had arrested three persons in this connection. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Arshinder Singh Chawla, told The Tribune here today that the arrested persons included an official of the Haryana Police and a player belonging to the Border Security Force (BSF). Satyender’s uncle Randhir Singh had lodged an FIR under Section 302 of the IPC on April 3. A breakthrough was achieved last night with the arrest of Jagjit, alias Jangi of Khanda Kheri village, Mukesh of Surya Nagar locality and Karambir of Makrauli Khurd. They have been sent in police custody for two days Of these, Mukesh is a Haryana police official, while Karambir is serving the BSF. Both are judo players. The third arrested accused, Jangi, is a property dealer and the car used by the accused belongs to him. According to the theory being considered by the police, judokas Dharmender and Satyender used to participate in the 66 kg weight category. Since both used to compete for the top position, eventually they decided that Dharmender would play in the 70 kg category. However, in the meanwhile, an attempt to murder case was registered against Dharmender and several others. Following this, Dharmender was put behind the bars. After being released, he approached his coach for support, which was reportedly refused. Dharmender and his companions allegedly thrashed the coach and were again booked by the police. Due to the police cases registered against him, Dharmender was expelled from the SAI hostel. Somehow, Dharmender held Satyender responsible for the situation he was in. Vinod, a one-time friend of Satyender, also joined him and both resolved to teach Satyender a lesson. The police is of the opinion that the duo did not want to kill Satyender, but since they were in an inebriated condition, they hit him so hard that he died on the spot. |
Sania-Huber lose
Amelia Islands (Florida), April 10 Sania and Huber failed to replicate their semifinal form, which saw them upset second seeded US-Spanish pair of Meghann Shaughnessy and Virginia Ruano Pascual. Asagoe and Srebotnik, who made it to the last stage after their opponents, the Czech-Italian pair of Kveta Peschke and Francesca Schiavone, conceded the semifinals in the third set, completely dominated the first set and broke the Indo-South African pair four times before finishing it off in 23 minutes. The Japanese-Slovenian pair hit 28 winners, compared to 17 by Sania and Huber, to take the set 6-2. The second set, which lasted 53 minutes, was more of a fighting affair as Sania and Huber tried putting up some resistance. They even managed to break their rivals twice but it was too little too late as Asagoe and Srebotnik had seized the momentum by then. The Japanese-Slovenian pair broke their rivals thrice and once again hit more winners to seal the set 6-4 and take the honours. The loss ended Sania’s hopes of winning her first WTA title this year after being knocked out in the first round of the singles competition by American Lisa Raymond.
