Teachers’ protest
: The district unit of the Democratic Teachers Front has condemned the state government for pursuing “anti-teachers” policies. The front, at a meeting held here at Nehru Park on Wednesday said the government was backtracking from constitutional propriety of providing free and easy education to millions of children by shifting responsibility of running primary schools to zila parishads and municipal councils.

Women’s rights: A function was organised under the “Chalo Gaon Ki Aur” scheme of the Central Government in Gohalwad in Tarn Taran subdivision here on Wednesday. Addressing the gathering, Dr Girija Shankar Vyas, Chairperson, National Commission Mission, said various laws had been made to prevent crime against women and protection of their rights.

SEMINAR: The Mechanical Engineering Department of Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology organised a seminar on career guidance for the final year students of the institute. Prof S.S. Jolly, Wg Cdr R. Sarwal and Prof Avtar Singh, chairman of the institute, spoke on the occasion.

Camp: To improve the living conditions of poor families of Manguwal Nari village in Hoshiarpur subdivision, a social responsibility project of Appollo Fibre Limited, Chohal was inaugurated by Mr D.K. Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner, on Wednesday. The project envisages various initiatives taken by Appollo Fibre, which includes providing free books to poor students of the village school, to provide economic assistance of Rs 10,000 for the marriage of girls of poor families and to provide employment to one member each of poor families.

Constable kills self
: Constable Kuldeep Singh (38) of the 80 Battalion allegedly shot himself to death inside the PAP Complex here. Kuldeep Singh’s body was found on Friday by a security officer inside the complex, the DSP, Mr Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh, said. There were two stengun shots fired from his officially issued weapon, the DSP said. One bullet mark was found on the wall of the room, Mr Khakh added.

Mountaineer’s visit
: Dicky Dolma, who at the age of 19 became the youngest woman in the world to climb Mount Everest in 1993, would visit the Pushpa Gujral Science City on Saturday. She was also the national women’s ski champion for over a decade. Dolma has been invited to open a movie on an Everest expedition shot in IMAX format in the Dome Theatre in the science city. The mountaineer from Palchan village near Manali in Himachal Pradesh set the world record as the youngest woman to scale Everest on May 10, 1993.

ELECTED: Captain Hari Singh has been elected as the president of the Citizens Welfare Society. Other office-bearers include: senior vice-president — Mr Shivcharan Singh Sidhu; treasurer — Mr Gurcharan Singh; vice-president — Mr Darshan Singh Bhai Roopa; and propaganda secretary — Mr Balwant Singh.

Woman killed
: A 65-year-old woman, Mindo, from nearby Hakupur locality, was run over by a train near the Satnampura railway crossing on Thursday evening. As per sources, Mindo was crossing the railway lines to purchase some medicines from the market across the tracks when she was hit by the train. The Government Railway Police personnel sent her body to the local Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Dowry death: Narinder Kaur allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in her-in-laws house at nearby Kandola-Khurad village near Bilga in Phillaur subdivision on Wednesday. Harbhaghan Singh, uncle of the deceased, alleged that Narinder, married to Makhan Singh three years back, was being harassed by her-in-laws for more dowry. The police has registered a case against the husband, father-in-law Pyara Singh and sister-in-law Paramjit.

Appointed: Mr Vijay Kumar Banga, Assistant Professor, Department of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Lala Lajpat Rai Institute of Engineering and Technology, Moga, has been appointed one of the reviewers of International Journal Elsevier, Amsterdam, in “Robotics and autonomous systems”.

APPEALED: An NGO Gita Gopal on Thursday appealed to blood donors to get their names registered with their organisation. Mr Man Singh Kakran of the NGO said the registration would be helpful in times of need.

AWARDED: A plan on bio-diesel as the future fuel prepared by two students of Shri Atmanand Jain Institute of Management and Technology, Ambala City, has been awarded the first prize at a competition held at Indore. The plan was presented by Ankush Khanna and Puneet Mittal, both first year students. The competition was organised by the Prestige Institute of Management and Research, Indore.

WELFARE SCHEME: Deputy Commissioner J.P. Kaushik on Thursday said a sum of Rs 12 crore would be spent on the education of children belonging to Scheduled Caste and Backward Classes. He said around 20,000 students in Ambala district were expected to benefit.

STUDENTS EXCEL: Students of DAV Public School, Ambala City, has maintained the trend excelling in academies. In Class VIII examination conducted by the DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, the school has shown 100 per cent result. Sidhant Singh, Anchal Sahni and Prateek and Ayushi Mahishwari, bagged the first three positions in Ambala by securing 94.33 per cent, 91.16 per cent and 90 per cent, respectively.

RESIDENTS’ DEMAND: Buckling under the residents’ pressure, the state government is reportedly under consideration to not to shift police station from here to Baddi. With Baddi fast emerging an industrial hub of the region, it was earlier planned to swap Baddi police chowki with Barotiwala police station. Sources revealed that in new arrangement it was planned not to shift the police station but to upgrade Baddi police chowki to a police station.
