2 killed, 13 hurt in Amritsar clash

Even as the holy city has virtually been converted into a police cantonment on the eve of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit to his home town, two persons were killed and 13 injured in an incident following a land dispute, here today. The incident has exposed working of the police which is not taking any chance with the security of the PM.

The two persons, Puran Singh an old man and Gurmeet Singh, only son of his parents died on the spot in an incident in Gulmohar Avenue on the Majitha road area, here . Tarjinder Singh, son of Ajit Singh resorted to indiscriminate firing from his licensed .12 bore weapon killing an old man on the spot .However, another supporter of Ajit Singh killed young man Gurmeet Singh (18) by indiscriminate firing.

In another incident two policemen were injured when they tried to stop party of commission agents at Bhagtanwala grain market from firing into the air. The policemen were identified as Rajinderpal Singh and Jasvinder Singh. It is alleged the victorious party had consumed liquor and resorted to firing into the air. They were taken to the local Civil Hospital here.

The tragedy occurred following a land dispute between one Ajit Singh and his neighbour Kartar Singh. It was the result of the a lane that existed in the house map of one party while the same (lane) was missing from the warring faction’s map. The case was in a court while Ajit Singh constructed a wall, blocking entry of his neighbour Kartar Singh in his absence. Ajit Singh allegedly had encroached on the lane when Mr Kartar Singh away. It is alleged that armed supporters of both factions assembled in the respective houses of warring parties. When family members of Kartar Singh tried to enter their house by scaling the wall, the opponents opened fire killing two persons on the spot and leaving several injured. While both deceased and nine injured belonged to the family of Kartar Singh, two from the side of accused received injuries in stone pelting.

The bone of contention was that the Municipal Corporation had passed the house plan showing 20-foot wide road ,opposite the house of Kartar Singh who had constructed it five years ago . However, Ajit Singh had contested the claim of ownership of the lane. The residents levelled serious charges against the SHO Sadar police station who failed to stop the construction of wall, encroaching on the 20 foot lane in the evening.

The police arrested four sons of Ajit Singh — Barjinder Singh, Rajinder Singh, Gurwinder Singh and Tarjinder Singh. The injured are Raj Kaur, his sister Charn Kaur, Kulwinder Singh, Balwinder Singh, Dalbir Singh, Tejpal Singh Bittu, Daulat Singh, Happy, Parkash Singh, Bir Singh and Davinder Singh (of Kartar Singh group) while two injured belonged to Ajit Singh’s group.
