Workers burn CM’s effigy, more than 100 held, released

Protesting against the alleged ‘high-handedness of the police against workers’ who were protesting outside the Oswal Woollen Mills on March 16, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions today burnt Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s effigy here today.

Harassed by daughter-in-law, couple attempt suicide

The Model Town police today booked a woman and her father for allegedly driving the aged parents of her husband to attempt suicide late last evening in Dugri here. The aged couple, Hardyal Singh and Amarjit Kaur, took an overdose of insulin in their bid to end their lives.

Improvement Trust members resign

Woman, parents accused of poisoning husband
Jagraon, March 22
Swaranjit Kaur of Mallah has accused her brother’s wife Sukhwant Kaur, her parents Lachhman Singh and Charanjit Kaur, hailing from Amargarh Kaler, of administering poison to her brother.

Oppn councillors to move court on MC budget issue

The SAD-BJP combine Opposition councillors in the local Municipal Corporation today announced taking legal recourse to stall the passing of the MC budget for 2006-07, which was allegedly passed in a controversial manner in the General House last week.

Rich tributes paid to martyrs
Ludhiana, March 22

On the eve of the 75th martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, activists of the All India Anti-Terrorist Front paid rich tributes to these brave heroes who sacrificed their lives for freedom of their motherland. A large number of workers sporting saffron turbans marched from various parts of the city to the martyrs' statues at Jagraon flyover and raised slogans of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev amar rahein and Bharat Mata ki jai.

Special counters for IT returns from today

The Income Tax Department here has made special arrangements for Bar members, assessees and public for receipt of tax returns. According to Ashok Juneja, president, and Ajay Paul Singh, general secretary, of the Taxation Bar Association, the last date for filing of returns for accounting year 2004-05 was March 31, 2006.

The Punjab Government under the leadership of Capt Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister, Punjab, is committed to launch various welfare schemes for the people and the Lok Suvidha Camp was part its efforts towards that goal, said Mr Sadhu Singh Dharamsaut, Parliamentary Secretary (Home, Justice and PWD), at such a camp organised at Mallowal village in Shamspur Kanungo circle here today.

ASI held, released on bail
Jagraon, March22
ASI Joga Singh of Jagraon was today arrested on the order of Ms Jitender Walia, Subdivisional Judicial Magistrate, when he appeared in the court. Joga Singh, in spite of the summons issued by this court to appear as witness in a criminal case, was avoiding to appear in the court. So the court issued his arrest warrants.

The investor community remained a confused lot as the BSE Sensex, after hitting the 11,000-mark yesterday, closed a little lower at 10,841 points today. While many investors expected the bullish trend to continue, no less was the number of those who expected a "correction any time".

Students of BA II arranged a farewell party for their seniors at Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, today. In a programme, collectively conducted by girls of BA Part II and III, various items were presented to entertain the guests of the occasion. The students presented various songs, skits, choreography, modelling shows etc.

Kids of Small Wonders Nursery School had a farewell party here today. The school was decorated with balloons and frills. Games were arranged for the kids. There was pick and win game on one table and match the colour on the other table. To create confidence in the children, every child was awarded a gift. After playing games, children danced merrily on the latest numbers.

Boys prefer Home Science

Against the explicit instruction of the Punjab School Education Board ,a large number of male students appeared for the Home Science (theory) papers of class X and Class XII. The sights outside examination centres here and surrounding areas revealed that the number of boys appearing for Home Science was much higher than that of girls.

Videocon consumer harassed, company penalised
Ludhiana, March 22
A leading TV manufacturing company, Videocon, has been ordered to pay a sum of Rs 5,000 as compensation to an aggrieved consumer. The order was passed by Mr A.S. Narula, President, Mr Daljit Singh Bakshi and Ms Pooja Dewan, members of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum.

102 pension cases settled

Vegetarian provisions provide all constituents of a balanced diet and are cheaper than those provided by non-vegetarian food, claimed Dr Kusum Lunia, author of “Shakaaahar; Saravshreshath Aahar”, a book that fetched her Dr Nemi Chand Memorial Award, founded by The Bhagwan Mahavir Foundation, Chennai.

54 tubectomy operations performed
Ludhiana, March 22
Fifty four tubectomy operations were performed at a family welfare camp organised at Dr B.L. Kapoor Memorial Hospital here today. According to Dr Waheguru Pal Singh, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, this was the third family welfare camp held so far this year.

The second annual athletics meet of RIMT Institute of Engineering and Technology started on the college grounds here today. The chief guest was Arjuna awardee and former Olympian Ramandeep Singh Grewal. He encouraged students to get actively involved in sports and appreciated the institute on giving importance to sports.
